Mt. Soledad Memorial to hold Veterans Day Ceremony

SAN DIEGO – The Mt. Soledad Memorial Association will salute all of the nation’s veterans while paying special recognition to the 250-year histories of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps this weekend.

Their public Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial.

This year’s event, titled “Honoring a Legacy: 250 Years at Sea, on Land, and in the Air,” will unify this national milestone with the deep, local history the two branches share with the San Diego region.

The city’s bond with the military will be commemorated by recognizing two historical installations and the pioneering figures who helped establish them:

Commander Theodore Gordon “Spuds” Ellyson, USN: The Navy’s first designated Naval Aviator, representing the origins of Naval Air Station North Island. Major Gen. Joseph Henry Pendleton, USMC (Ret): Marine Base San Diego’s first commanding officer, representing Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

Two distinguished veterans from the Navy and Marine Corps will speak on the history of their respective branches and the continued effects they have on San Diego and beyond.

Vice Admiral Charles Martoglio, USN (Ret.), is a recognized expert in strategic planning and national security, capping a 40-year career in the U.S. Navy. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he spent half his service at sea, including command of the Ronald Reagan Aircraft Carrier Strike Group.

The other half of his career focused on developing and leading military strategy for all U.S. forces. His decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal.

Today, he advises on global security issues and teaches grand strategy at UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy. He and his wife reside in Coronado.

Brigadier Gen. Paul Lebidine, USMC retired in 2017 after completing a 33-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps that began with his enlistment in 1984. After being meritoriously promoted, he earned his commission and served as a platoon commander and company executive officer, including deployment for Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

His extensive service culminated in his time as the commanding general of the 4th Marine Division from 2015 to 2017. His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, and multiple awards of the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star.

This year’s ceremony is partnered deeply with the community, welcoming the La Jolla High Viking Marching Band to play patriotic music, the Canyon Hills USN JROTC Color Guard, US Navy veteran JJ Gentry to sing the national anthem, and a flyover performed by the San Diego Salute Aerial Formation Team.

The public is invited to attend this commemorative event. Guests are encouraged to arrive early. Free parking will be available at Mt. Soledad Presbyterian Church and The French American School.
