ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Schools in New York State will soon be required to have lessons in personal finance and climate.
The New York State Board of Regents announced Tuesday it will require all public schools in the state to include lessons in personal finance and climate education for students in grades K-12 starting in the 2026-27 school year.
The topics that will be taught include budgeting and money management, saving and investing, credit and debit management, earning income, causes and impacts of climate change, and more.
The new requirements are part of phase two of the NY Inspires Plan, which aims to “transform education” in the state and change high school graduation requirements.
“Every student in New York deserves a meaningful education that prepares them not only for college and career, but for life,” said Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. on the Board of Regents website.
Personal finance education will be required starting in the 2026–27 school year for grades 5-12, and the 2027-28 school year for grades K-4. Climate education will be required starting in the 2027–28 school year for grades 5-12, and the 2028-29 school year for grades K-4.
The Board of Regents says districts will have flexibility on how they execute these lessons by either embedding instruction into existing subject areas, making it its own course, or make personal finance part of Career and Technical Education programming.
