The Best Comeback in Years, Defense Steps Up Huge, A Lesson Learned, and Other Bulls Bullets

Fun Fact: The Chicago Bulls’ 24-point comeback win over the Philadelphia 76ers is the franchise’s largest since February 17, 2021, when they erased a 25-point deficit against the Detroit Pistons.

Even Funner Fact: The Chicago Bulls are 7-1 and sit alone at the top of the Eastern Conference.

The first of last night’s game was a good old-fashioned beatdown. They looked downright stunned by Philadelphia’s aggressiveness in transition and on the glass. They also had zero answers for Tyrese Maxey, whose combination of quickness and ball-handling downright embarrassed the Chicago Bulls’ defense. Philly appeared destined to run away with the game and slap Chicago in the face with reality. Sure, the Bulls got off to a hot start, but there are levels to this thing! The Chicago Bulls deserve an immense amount of credit for the way they came into the second half. Instead of throwing in the towel and looking toward this weekend’s tough back-to-back slate, they dug their feet in. Matas Buzelis’ opening sequence of the third quarter set the tone for what would be an outstanding comeback effort. After failing to record a single rebound and scoring only 2 points over the first two quarters, the second-year rookie was the first Bull to look downright ticked off. He blocked Kelly Oubre’s shot at the rim before draining a three-pointer 9 seconds later. While Philly would strike back with two straight buckets of their own, Buzelis came right down the floor, drove past Oubre, side-stepped VJ Edgecombe, and completed the two-handed slam. To be sure, this game was far from Buzelis’ best work. He finished the night with only 10 points on 4-11 shooting. However, Buzelis grabbed 5 rebounds, drained two threes, picked up a block and a steal, and finished as a +22 in the second half. He isn’t going to be the player many talk about after the win, but I genuinely feel like it was his overall mentality that rubbed off on the rest of the team in that second half. Are some going to rule last night’s win a greater collapse than a comeback? Absolutely. That’s what happens when a team shoots 8-20 in the paint and 2-13 from downtown over two quarters. But I challenge anyone to go back and watch the final 15 minutes of action. The Chicago Bulls genuinely rose to the occasion. Their defensive intensity was night and day from the first half, and they largely have the bench to thank for that. Kevin Huerter and Dalen Terry had excellent blocks. Tre Jones did a great job staying in front of guys and forcing touch jumpers. Patrick Williams and Jalen Smith were initiating contact first in the post. The starters fed off this intensity as they slowly made their way back into the game. Heck, even Nikola Vucevic played impressive defense! He forced Joel Embiid into three consecutive misses as the clock ticked toward the 3-minute mark. Now, did the 76ers help by settling for some ill-advised shots? Sure. But the Bulls’ high-energy and frantic style played a part in making that happen. They deserve a ton of credit for starting to make the 76ers panic. In the second half as a whole, the Chicago Bulls held the 76ers to 13-45 shooting and outrebounded them 33-15. This came after Philly shot 55.7 percent in the first half and were +10 in the rebounding department (9-3 on the offensive glass). At the end of the day, this was an example of a nearly perfect halftime adjustment by the Bulls. Everyone knew what they had to do to get back into this game. At the same time, this is no way to live, and I was thrilled to hear Nikola Vucevic stress exactly that despite being the hero of the night. This is what you want to hear from a veteran after a win like that:

“We can’t rely on making these comebacks,” Vucevic told the media (h/t CHGO on YouTube). “The way we started the game, we can’t have those type of starts, especially against a team like Philly. We showed a lot of resilience to be able to comeback. To stick with it until the end. It was a great win. But we have to focus more on why we started the way we did and not let it happen the way it did.”

By the way, if you have yet to see Vucevic’s game-winner, what the heck are you waiting for? WATCH: Chicago Bulls Stay in East’s Top Spot Thanks to Nikola Vucevic Game-Winner Isaac Okoro deserves some love. The forward has looked increasingly more comfortable as part of the team’s starting lineup. He has now scored at least 14 points and has drained a combined five threes in the Chicago Bulls’ last two games. The forward is never going to jump off the screen offensively, but he has been a lot more opportunistic over the last handful of games. You can tell he understands that open shots will find him as long as he moves with purpose on that side of the ball. Most importantly, though, we are starting to see his physicality rub off on this group defensively. Josh Giddey has been downright unstoppable over this 7-1 stretch. I was pretty optimistic about what he could accomplish coming into this season … but I didn’t see this! The guard is undoubtedly on an All-Star trajectory.
