Two years doesn’t leave a lot of time for on-the-job training.
Considering that, Brian Rudy plans to lean heavily on his vast political experience, as he was well-positioned Tuesday night to win his race for a seat in Greeley’s city council, representing Ward 4.
After a few batches of results were accounted for in Tuesday night’s election, Rudy had a strong lead in the race, with 50.3% (2,978) of the vote.
Amberleigh Gregor had 31.9% (1,886), while Bill Gillard had 17.8% (1,051).
On paper, Rudy has the most extensive political experience of the three candidates.
Rudy plans to lean on that experience to contribute to the council, as he takes a seat that opened in the middle of Dale Hall’s term, as Hall pursued the Greeley mayor’s office.
“It’s a two-year term, and I’ve done this (working on a city council) for 10 years, so I can hit the ground running on Day 1,” Rudy said. “Amberleigh, I have nothing bad to say about her. And, Bill Gillard, I have nothing bad to say about him, either. But, in a two-year term, there is a learning curve they would need, and it’s going to take them months to figure out how everything works in a city.
“I don’t have that learning curve. I know exactly how it works. … I’m ready to rock and roll.”
Rudy, 51, is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado where he majored in criminal justice.
In addition to being a local small business owner — owning four Jimmy John’s franchises — he sat on the Evans city council for 10 years, including four years as mayor.
He also spent 21 years as a high school sports coach in Greeley-Evans School District 6.
“Evans is a great city, and I love Evans; it has the same issues as Greeley, just on a smaller scale,” Rudy said. “Most of the issues we’re going to have, Catalyst and Cascadia aside, I’ve worked on before. I’ve worked on infrastructure. I’ve worked on streets. I’ve worked with fire and police.”
Though Rudy has hopes of working in a unified way with the rest of the seven-member council, he also said he plans to bring a different perspective, to a benefit of the city.
“I’m going to bring maybe a new light to some things,” he said. “I feel really good about it. I’ve met, multiple times, with every member that is either elected tonight or is already sitting on the council. I have good relationship with all of them, including ones that are politically on a different side than I am.
“We can work well together.”
