Mission Bay finishes regular season undefeated, wins City League

PACIFIC BEACH – Anchored by a seven-touchdown night from quarterback Trey Arnold on Friday, Mission Bay High rolled to a 49-14 victory over City League foe Hoover High in their regular season finale to complete the Buccaneers’ first undefeated regular season since 2009.

“Coming into the year, we wanted to win every game we could, and win the league,” said Mission Bay coach Greg Tate. “But making the playoffs and winning in the playoffs is still the overall goal. We still need to complete that mission.”

Mission Bay took control of the game thanks to its passing attack. Arnold turned in perhaps his most impressive night of the season on Friday, going 34-for-47 through the air for 390 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception.

For the regular season, Arnold finished the year with 3,090 passing yards with 45 passing touchdowns, while completing 70.3% of his passes.

“It all came down to trust for Trey,” Tate said. “He trusted his OC to put him in a position to be successful. He is trusting the process and trusting his teammates. He bought in and trusted everything that was going on in the off-season, and it paid dividends.”

Five different Mission Bay wideouts finished with four or more catches on the night.

Sophomore Collin Scott helped lead the way by catching five balls for 64 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, junior Jayden Marcelino hauled in six catches for 76 yards and three scores.

“With receivers, everyone wants to be the guy. These guys, though, have just competed and pushed each other every day at practice,” Tate said. “Everyone understands that, even though you may have just had one catch or two catches this game, it doesn’t mean you might not go off in the next game.”

On the defensive side, the Buccaneers were once again led by their pass rush with four sacks. As a team, they’ve combined for 30 sacks on the year. Fernando Bautista turned in a sack and two more tackles for loss in the victory.

“Fernando is just a dog,” said Tate, “He sort of brings that attitude to the team. He’s physical and just gives 100% on every play. He’s someone that the guys feed off.”

The 10-0 regular season has helped Mission Bay secure the No. 3 overall seed in the CIF Div. II playoffs. As a result, they’ve earned a first-round bye. They’ll await the winner of No.11 seed San Diego vs. No.6 seed Imperial High School for a quarterfinal matchup.

“With this extra week, we’re gonna watch our film. See where we can clean up our mistakes, clean up our technique. Just make sure we have a game plan ahead of time for whoever we are playing,” Tate said.

Mission Bay’s quarterfinal playoff game will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, at home.
