Willams Field High School senior Amelia Ray wants to make the world a better place any way that she can.
Ray, a finalists for the Arizona Sports’ Character Counts Scholarship, presented by Parker & Sons, is currently president of the National Honor Society at her school and is participating in an AP Capstone Research study.
Through her capstone research, Ray is studying the differences in perception, knowledge and opinions about organ donation across generations and plans to publish her findings.

After high school, Ray wants to get her EMT certification as she works toward her eventual goal of becoming a trauma surgeon. She has already spent time shadowing emergency medial services to see the work they do firsthand.
“I have been able to gain insight into medical services while assisting and providing support for the community,” Ray said. “This experience has furthered my love for the medical field, and has confirmed to me that this is the right career path.”
Ray has been finding ways to help her community for years. When she was in fifth grade, her STEM club was selected as one of 16 teams in the nation as finalists for the 2019 National Geographic Geochallange.
She and her peers were the youngest finalists selected and the only all-female team. Their project involved designing a prototype to combat plastic pollution in waterways. Trash and plastic waste are still important issues for Ray today.
“Each piece of trash symbolizes more than just a piece of trash being discarded,” Ray said. “It symbolizes our morals and the carelessness that we have been comfortable with in society.”
Throughout her life, Ray has always been able to balance her passions with her responsibilities. She ran track during her freshman year and played volleyball for three years, earning the 5.0 GPA scholar athlete award in 2024.
Ray participates in many clubs at her school and looks to make change wherever she can, even in ways as small as picking up trash wherever she goes.
“If I have the opportunity to make an impact in even the smallest way, I will take that opportunity,” Ray said. “Ultimately, I am excited to see the difference my actions make within my community and eventually on a broader scale.”
Ray plans to attend Arizona State University after graduation.
