He was a player, then a minor league manager, then a player again, then a coach for Team Israel, then an entrepreneur in the digital autographs world, then a TV guy, then a player development director for the Dodgers, then a manager for the Phillies and Giants, then an AGM for the Marlins, and now a GM. You can’t accuse him of not having a breadth of baseball experience. But it would certainly be atypical for a former player to jump straight into the top baseball role (the Giants are currently doing it with Buster Posey, though he was part of the ownership group and executive board for a couple years post-playing before he took over as the president of baseball operations). It’s also just funny because we were JUST SAYING how the Rockies were FINALLY going to get a real head of baseball operations from among the pool of qualified up-and-comer types … and then the two finalists, DBacks AGM Amiel Sawdaye and Guardians AGM Matt Forman, were suddenly out of the running for reasons no one quite knows. The Athletic report also indicates it’s unclear whether the Rockies were going back to other earlier interviews, or just starting over from scratch (which makes me wonder if that’s why this Ottavino stuff is coming out now). The GM Meetings are next week, by the way. Oh, and the Rockies don’t have a manager yet either, since they were waiting on the new top baseball man to make that selection. Rockies gonna Rockie.
