A Lake County man appeared in federal court on Monday after being arrested by the Secret Service for allegedly threatening to kill President Donald Trump.
Trent Schneider, 57, was taken into custody by Secret Service members and a SWAT team at his home in north suburban Winthrop Harbor. Appearing before a judge in a hearing that went on for about a half hour, Schneider was charged with making a true threat to injure another person, the president.
Court records revealed Schnieder posted a video of himself several weeks ago making several threats that included death threats against Trump. He also referenced getting quote “a lot of guns”
On Monday night, neighbors along his rural street were not willing to talk to NBC Chicago on camera. At least one said off camera that they had been through enough.
NBC 5 Investigates found prior offenses including aggravated battery and disorderly conduct.
The Secret Service released the following statement to NBC Chicago:
“Protecting the President of the United States is the Secret Service’s top priority. We fully investigate any and all threats to his safety – no matter the platform – because we take them extremely seriously. This case should serve as a reminder that actions have consequences,” Secret Service Director Sean Curran said. “I am proud of our agents’ swift and decisive actions in this case. We are grateful to our law enforcement partners at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Winthrop Harbor Police Department, as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, for their invaluable help in carrying out our protective mission.”
Schneider will return to court for a detention hearing on Thursday and will remain in federal custody until then. He could face up to five years in federal prison.
