Trump administration prepares for mission against drug cartels in Mexico

American combat units have already started training for a mission inside Mexico that would — literally — put boots on the ground there.

It would be an offensive operation targeting Mexico’s lawless drug cartels and leadership.

The Pentagon’s biggest bulls eye would be on Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes – a druglord known as El Mencho, who also happens to be Chicago’s Public Enemy No. 1.

Special operations teams are already training for the Mexico assault, in conjunction with the CIA according to law enforcement sources, who say the plans are not yet fully formed.

Since President Trump declared drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations earlier this year, the door was opened to more aggressive tools-including use of the military.

“For us to put US soldiers on the ground in Mexico is just a tremendous obstacle in terms of political ramifications,” said Jack Riley, who was special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Chicago from 2010 to 2014. Riley’s legendary law enforcement career was highlighted by his relentless pursuit of drug kingpin Joaquin el Chapo Guzman.

“To simply blow up a couple of drug labs, I think may prove to be more political theater than effective in the long term,” said Riley. “So I would love to sit down and talk to the president or his aides and explain this has to be a robust, continuous assault, and preferably with our Mexican counterparts.”

During a briefing on Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said the U.S. won’t be permitted to send soldiers across the border and she urges  a collaborative fight against cartels.

Since September, unilateral U.S. air strikes on at least 14 suspected drug running boats offshore South America have killed more than sixty suspected narco-terrorists.

U.S. special ops planners are now said to be focused on drone attacks against cartel command and control sites in Mexico, as well as the druglords themselves. Atop that hit list is New Generation cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera “el Mancho” Cervantes. More than a decade ago top federal drug enforcement officials in Chicago declared the illusive Menchu as the city’s public enemy number one-carrying a $15-million bounty.

“When I look at the narcotics fight now it appears to me that it is really shifting to an all-out military assault. In the long run that will not do justice, I think, to the American people,” Riley said. “So I do worry about it.”

Riley said his concern is simple: the aim of law enforcement is to put wrongdoers in prison, while the aim of the military is to put them in the ground.

Officials from the Department of Defense, the CIA and The White House all declined comment on this story, which was first reported by NBC News. It’s been almost 55 years since President Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs. That makes it America’s longest ongoing war.
