ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With Election Day just hours away, more than 31,000 people have already cast an early vote in Monroe County.
Elections without a presidential race typically see lower voter turnout. In the 2024 general election, over 67% of Monroe County residents voted, according to voter turnout reports. But less than 20% of voters participated in the 2023 general election, where there was not a presidential election tied to the ballot.
One voter who plans to cast a vote on Tuesday said they care more about local elections because they feel it gives them more control over what happens in Rochester.
“I care honestly more about local elections because I really care about Rochester, and I think we have more control over basically what happens in the elections,” Lee Klein said. “So I think it’s important to vote every year.”
Another voter heading to the polls on Tuesday shared that the importance of voting in local elections was instilled in him from a young age by his mother.
“I think it was a core value that came from school,” Peter Grassl said. “I graduated from Brighton High School. My mom ran what’s called the national student parent mock election, and it taught young people that it’s important to be involved in the community and make your opinion yield a difference,” he said.
