A woman was found shot to death in the backyard of a Placentia home and a man who returned to the scene as police were investigating was arrested on suspicion of her death, authorities said over the weekend.
Placentia police were called to the 2100 block of McCormack Lane, within a residential area in the northern part of the city and just north of Bastanchury Road, for a welfare check about 7:35 p.m. Friday and found the woman in the backyard with at least one gunshot wound, police said.
“During the course of the investigation, an adult male resident returned to the scene and was subsequently taken into custody for the homicide,” police said.
Placentia police Sgt. Joe Connell said Sunday that the man and woman knew each other “in some capacity,” but police were still working to determine their exact relationship. While the man was identified in the police statement as a resident, it was unknown whether the woman lived at the home.
What led to the shooting was also not known, Connell said.
The woman was not identified by police pending notification of her relatives.
Police declined to identify the suspect on Sunday, citing an ongoing investigation.
