ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The nonprofit Downtown ROCs has commissioned a new public artwork to honor longtime community leader Margaret “Midge” Thomas.
The mural by local muralist Shawnee Hill will be painted throughout the day Monday, Nov. 3 on the exterior wall of Abilene Bar & Lounge at 153 Liberty Pole Way. The public is invited to stop in throughout the day to watch the work in progress.
The painting, titled “Midge”, will depict two outstretched hands connecting over a background of flowers, symbolizing unity, compassion, and the power of beauty to bring people together.
Midge Thomas, who turned 99 in September, has contributed to the community in multiple ways, from helping domestic violence victims to serving refugees looking for housing.
Downtown ROCs is a nonprofit dedicated to “cleaning, beautifying and activating downtown spaces,” it states in a release. It is teaming up with RocGrowth to commission the artwork from Hill, a Rochester artist known for several murals across the city — including another on Liberty Pole Way directly across from the new site.
