Witnesses have described their horror after a mass stabbing on a train bound for London last night.
The train stopped at Huntingdon station, where armed police arrested two suspects eight minutes after the first 999 call – both suspects have been confirmed as UK nationals and have been detained on suspicion of murder.
A witness said he saw one of the men tasered on the platform before he was taken into police custody.
Witnesses said they saw injured people running through the train with stab wounds trying to escape the attackers. Ten people were taken to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge after the attack, with two still being treated for life-threatening injuries.
British Transport Police were called at 7.42pm yesterday evening, to reports of “multiple stabbings” on board the LNER train which was travelling between Doncaster and London Kings Cross. Counter terror police are also assisting with the investigation.
Superintendent John Loveless of the British Transport Police said the two arrested were a 32 year old black British national and a 35 year old British national of Caribbean descent.
Loveless confirmed11 people had been treated in hospital, and after nine originally presented with life-threatening injuries, four have now been discharged. Two victims remain in a critical condition.

Loveless added there was “nothing to suggest” that the stabbing was a terrorist attack.
‘I looked at my hand and it was covered in blood’
Olly Foster, who witnessed the attack, told BBC News he first realised there had been attacks when a man ran past him shouting: “Run, run, there’s a guy stabbing literally everyone and everything.”
He said: “I put my hand on this chair, just trying to push myself forward, like just trying to push myself forward and then I look at my hand and it’s covered in blood, and then I look at the chair and there’s blood all over the chair, and then I look ahead and there’s blood all on the chairs.
“We pulled the emergency alarm just trying to work out if we could barricade the doors, can we block the doors, but we couldn’t really.”
Olly said he ended up with a group of six people, including a woman who was “in a bit of a state”.
“The guy had actually tried to stab her, and one of the older guys, who was an absolute hero, blocked it with his head. He had this gash on his head, he’s got a gash on his neck, and we’re kind of giving him jackets to keep the pressure on the blood,” he said.
‘I thought it was a Halloween prank’
Wren Chambers, another passenger on the train, said she heard “screaming and shouting” before she saw a man “with a very clear wound bleeding quite badly on his arm” running through the train.
She said: “I thought it was like some sort of Halloween prank at first, but then he was shouting that someone had got a knife, he was stabbed. Then a few more people came running down the train, and then I grabbed my bag and my coat, and then I got up and moved forward down the train after them.

Passengers said they saw waves of people running through the carriages trying to escape with one witness telling The Sunday Times people were hiding in toilets to try and avoid the rampage.
‘Police started shouting get down, get down’
One man aboard the train, who gave his name as Gavin, told Sky News said he had his headphones on, and noticed there was something wrong when someone walked past who was “extremely bloodied”.
He recalled that person was “basically on the floor” by the time the train pulled in at Huntingdon .

“We couldn’t progress further down the train away from the suspect because that person ended up collapsing on the floor. So they were taken into an ambulance pretty much straight away,” he said.
The attack took place after the train had left Peterborough station, with the driver stopping at Huntingdon after the emergency alarm was raised and police were called.
Gavin said there was already a significant police presence on the platform when the train stopped, and he saw a suspect get off the train as well as evacuating passengers.
“So while we were being told to come out of the station, the suspect was obviously running around then as well,” he said.
Gavin reported that he saw the armed police arrest a suspect.
He said: “As they got closer to him they started shouting like ‘get down, get down’, he then was waving a knife, quite a large knife, and then they detained him.
“I think it was a taser that got him down in the end. But I only saw one person at that point.”
What has the government said?
Healey urged people to avoid speculation. He said: “The early assessment is that this was an isolated incident, an isolated attack.
“So there is no reason for the rest of us not to get on with our lives, get on and travel to the places we need to get to.”
Healey also revealed this was an attack which hit “close to home”. “This was the very service that my wife and I, Jackie, took just a few hours before this attack. It is the service I use every week to get home to Rotherham,” he said.
“So I can’t begin to imagine how shocked and frightened those passengers were and a huge tribute to those passengers and the emergency services for their response because it could have been so much worse.”
In a statement on X, Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote: “The appalling incident on a train near Huntingdon is deeply concerning.
“My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response.”
