Mizzou Sweeps Vanderbilt and Mckendree, Women Win Every Event

The Mizzou women earned decisive victories over Vanderbilt and McKendree on Saturday, scoring nearly 200 points more than each team while the Mizzou men defeated McKendree by more than 100 points.

    Women’s Meet Recap

    The Mizzou women won every single event of the meet including both relays and both diving events.

    They started with a sweep of the top three places in the 200 medley relay with the ‘B’ team of Libby Bakker (25.33), Zara Zallen (26.91), Kylee Sullivan (22.84), and Katie Kuehn (22.74) setting the fastest time at 1:37.82. The ‘A’ team finished 2nd in 1:38.18 and the ‘C’ team was 3rd in 1:42.19.

    A similar group of swimmers won the 400 freestyle relay with Lina Bank leading off in 49.87, Zallen swimming 2nd in 49.54, Francesca Smith going 3rd in 49.07, and Kuehn anchoring in 51.66.

    There were a few two-event winners on the women’s side. Zara Zallen won the 100 and 200 freestyle, swimming 49.22 in the 100, a new season best time to drop from the 51.53 she swam against Purdue two weeks ago. In the 200 free, she swam a new season best 1:47.60, a six second drop from the 1:53.94 she swam in the middle of October.

    Libby Bakker won the 100 and 200 backstrokes for Mizzou. Her 100 back time of 54.21 was a new personal best, dropping from the 54.48 mark she set in March of 2024. In the 200 back, she swam 1:58.12, another new personal best time, dropping from the 1:59.06 she swam two weeks ago. This marks a two second drop this season from her pre-college best of 2:00.28 from March of 2024.

    The breaststroke events both went to Lina Bank. She touched in a season best 1:00.10 in the 100, coming in just two seconds ahead of teammate Paige Striley‘s 1:02.22. In the 200, she swam another new season best mark of 2:14.10.

    Zoe Schneider was the other double event winner for the Tigers. She started with a win in the 500 freestyle at 4:49.62, winning the event by 11 seconds to come in as the only swimmer under 5:00. This swim was a new season best, dropping from the 5:00.09 she swam at the first meet of the season. She also won the 400 IM in 4:15.70, coming in four seconds ahead of teammate Piper McNeil‘s 4:19.40 for 2nd place.

    The Tigers also won the diving events with Mia Henninger taking the 1-Meter in 289.58 and Gaby Carmona taking the 3-Meter in 316.50.

    Men’s Meet Recap

    The Mizzou men won almost all of their events. They started with the top time in the 200 medley relay, taking the top three spots with their ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ relays. The ‘A’ relay of Quinlan Gould (21.85), Logan Ottke (23.77), Luke Nebrich (20.16), and Francois Malherbe (19.42) swimming 1:25.20.

    Gould followed up that relay split with event wins in both backstrokes. He won the men’s 100 back, coming in three-and-a-half seconds ahead of McKendree’s Joey Ovanic‘s 50.07 in 2nd. He won the 200 backstroke in 1:44.16, touching three seconds ahead of teammate Brady Johnson.

    His 100 back was a new personal best time, dropping from his previous best of 46.96 from the Wolfpack Elite Invite last year. His 200 back was a new season best, dropping from the 1:49.50 he swam vs Purdue.

    Luke Nebrich also won two individual events to follow his 20.16 on the fly leg of the medley. He swam 19.03 in the 50, which is the 5th fastest time in the country this season. This swim was only a hundredth off his lifetime best in the event of 19.02 from SECs last February. In the 100, he swam 42.59 to win the event by nearly two seconds over teammate Ethan Vance‘s 44.30.

    Diver Collier Dyer was their final double individual event winner, taking the 1-Meter event in 369.83 and the 3-Meter in 362.63.

    Francois Malherbe (200 free- 1:37.72), Jan Zubik (200 fly- 1:41.99) and Matthew Mortenson (400 IM- 3:50.28) were Mizzou’s other individual event winners.

    The Tigers also won the 400 freestyle relay with Malherbe (43.93), Luke Nebrich (42.07), Ethan Vance (43.82), and Brady Johnson (43.46) swam 2:53.29 for the win, coming in three seconds ahead of their ‘B’ relay.

    The McKendree men won a few individual events, led by Jakub Rynkiewicz’s double win in the distance free events. He took the 500 free in 4:28.69, a new season best time, and the 1000 free in 9:13.39, which was a new personal best.

    The 100 fly went to Vova Gavrysh in 46.93 for the Bearcats. This was a new personal best, dropping from the 47.64 he swam at the McKendree Last Chance meet in February. This swim was under the 47.50 it took to get invited to last year’s Division II NCAA Championships.
