Woman, 38, among two charged over Louvre jewellery heist

Two more people have been charged over the Louvre Museum jewellery heist, a Paris prosecutor has said.

Four thieves stole an estimated £76m worth of jewellery from the world’s most-visited museum during the heist on 19 October, which lasted less than eight minutes.

One woman, 38, has been charged with complicity in organised theft and criminal conspiracy with a view to committing a crime, the AFP news agency reported.

A 37-year-old man has also been charged with theft and criminal conspiracy, according to the new agency. Both denied involvement in the robbery, but remained in custody, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said.

On Saturday, the 38-year-old woman was reportedly in tears as she appeared before a magistrate. The woman confirmed she lived in Paris’s northern suburb of La Courneuve, AFP reported.

The magistrate ruled the woman – who has not been named – must stay in custody on the grounds of a “risk of collusion” and “disturbance of public order”.

The 37-year-old man was known to the judicial authorities for previous theft offences, the Paris prosecutor said.

He has been placed in pre-trial detention ahead of a hearing, which is set to take place in the coming days, she added.

Four men carried out the heist. Two men who had been previously arrested were already charged with theft and criminal conspiracy. Local officials said the two men had “partially recognised” their involvement in the heist.

Another person arrested this week is also believed to have been involved in the heist.

    How did the heist unfold?

The items stolen from the renowned museum included jewellery owned by two of Napoleon’s wives.

The gang arrived at the museum shortly after it opened to visitors last Sunday and used power tools to break through a first-floor window in the museum’s Gallery of Apollo.

The four men threatened guards in the gallery, seized jewels from two display cases and escaped using a cherry-picker lift.

The thieves reportedly arrived at the Louvre at 09:30 local time on Sunday, just after the museum opened to visitors.

The heist occurred in the Gallery of Apollo, a grand section of the museum which overlooks the River Seine.

The suspects drove a vehicle-mounted lift up to the side of the building before using it to gain access to the first floor of the gallery.

The four men wore high-vis worker jackets and concealed their faces using balaclavas.

Having reached a first-floor window of the gallery, the thieves used angle grinders to break through the glass, which French authorities said was not reinforced.

They then entered the Gallery of Apollo, threatened the guards and cut through the glass of two jewellery cases.

The gang escaped out the window using the vehicle lift with eight pieces of priceless jewellery, and dropped a ninth – a crown belonging to Empress Eugénie.

The men reportedly tried and failed to set fire to the mechanical ladder before making their escape.

Mounting two Yamaha scooters which were waiting outside the building, the robbers sped off into the city.

The men were inside the gallery for less than four minutes and had made their escape by 09:38, according to French police.
