“Unorthodox” Practice Events, Another Bengals Player Wants Out, and Other Bears Bullets

My high school alma mater plays a football playoff game today. Here’s hoping that this isn’t the only bit of playoff football I’ll see this year.

Desperate times often call for desperate measures. And when desperate times call for desperate measures, things tend to get weird. So you can imagine the look on my face when I saw that Chicago Bears Offensive Coordinator Declan Doyle was looking to try some “unorthodox” things in an attempt to rid the team of its penalty problem:

#Bears OC Declan Doyle said they've reviewed every penalty from the entire season and have resorted to "some unorthodox things" in practice to get it cleaned up."It's something we're addressing and is really important for us to stay on schedule."

    — Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) October 30, 2025 I took to social media to ask what “unorthodox things” the Bears were doing to fix their penalty problems, requesting wrong answers only. Naturally, you fine folks did not disappoint. Cattle prods. Ordering a hot dog with ketchup at The Wiener Circle. Blocking drills against sumo wrestlers. Forcing penalized players to watch Mamma Mia after each time they are penalized. Shock collars. We could go on. But for the sake of brevity, we won’t.

Yours truly was so consumed by the Bears’ Week 8 loss to the Baltimore Ravens that news of the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive players holding a players-only meeting after losing to the New York Jets totally slipped past me at the start of the week. The Bengals coughed up more than 500 yards to a Justin Fields-quarterbacked Jets team that was previously winless and is perpetually in disarray. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams should absolutely carve this week. No excuses. If he doesn’t, then I’ll officially be worried. Hopefully, that isn’t a bridge we have to cross. The drama continues to unfold in Cincy, where defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson has reportedly submitted a request to be traded or released. Jackson was a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and has been a healthy scratch for six of the team’s first eight games. ESPN’s Ben Baby has Jackson as the third Bengals defender to ask for a trade out of town in recent weeks. This doesn’t even include star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, whose long-term contract situation remains up in the air.

It would be problematic if the Bears can’t find a way to beat a Bengals team that has players (on an already vulnerable defense) trying to jump ship like rats off of a sinking ship. Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) scrambles in the second quarter of the NFL Preseason Week 2 game between the Chicago Bears and the Cincinnati Bengals at Soldier Field in downtown Chicago on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024. | Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK A note from the Trib’s Brad Biggs (via Twitter/X): Referee Clete Blakeman is taking his crew to Cicncinnati for Sunday’s game between the Bears and Bengals. Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen on Austin Booker, who will make his 2025 NFL season debut after spending the first eight weeks of the season on injured reserve: “The last couple weeks, he’s been outstanding in practice. He’ll get an opportunity to get out there this week and we’ll see exactly what he can do.” Booker suffered a knee injury during the preseason, landed on injured reserve, and exhausted his full 21-day practice window before being activated from IR earlier in the week. (Sun-Times) I’m a sucker for stories breaking down the blocking contributions of wide receivers, so I enjoyed reading this piece from Nicholas Moreano at Marquee. It will be mildly annoying if beating the Bears sparks the Ravens’ rebound from a 1-5 team to a playoff squad. But it would give us new perspective on that Week 8 loss in Baltimore. Not that something like that is worth anything.
