Matas Buzelis Showed the Chicago Bulls’ Former Stars That He’s Taken the Torch

Something about Matas Buzelis’ performance on Wednesday night felt poetic.

The franchise welcomed both Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan back into the United Center. The two multi-time All-Stars were once seen as pillars of an organization in win-now mode. Yet, their best season came in 2021-22 when they finished 46-36 and lost in a swift five games to the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round. This also happened to be the last time the team started 4-0, which happens to be the Chicago Bulls’ current record.

Indeed, the Bulls have now matched the best start of the LaVine-DeRozan era with a far younger and less-assuming roster. And Buzelis has been a pivotal part of that. He has come out of the gate averaging nearly 17.0 points per game on 51.0 percent shooting from the field. The 21-year-old forward is bringing more hope to fans than they have had in years, and he’s done that by showing the kind of flashes that suggest real stardom could be right around the corner.

The win over Sacramento was yet another example of Buzelis’ innate ability to rise to the occasion. From the moment the ball tipped, he looked like the most engaged player on the court. Situational awareness is key to becoming one of the NBA’s best, and Buzelis noticed the opportunity he had to attack the Kings’ questionable defense. In less than 4 minutes of action, Buzelis was 3-4 from the field with 7 points.

After a failed drive to the rim on the Bulls’ first possession of the game, Buzelis nailed a catch-and-shoot triple. Moments later, he went right at DeRozan and spun his way to the rim for the finish. Up next was another drive, using the Nikola Vucevic screen to ball-fake past Domantas Sabonis for the and-one lay-in.

“My teammates told me to be aggressive. They said it’s going to be hard to stop me because they’re going to be focused on other guys. Vooch told me to be aggressive. That’s what I did,” Matas Buzelis told reporters after the game.

This hot first quarter was only the beginning of a strong night for Buzelis. He would go on to finish the game with a team-high 27 points on 11-18 shooting from the field. We watched him attack DeRozan off the bounce multiple times, drain four catch-and-shoot threes, and cut to the rim for some easy finishes. Add in 5 rebounds, a pair of steals, and a rejection after sticking with Dennis Schroder all the way to the rim, and Buzelis’ +18 came as no surprise.

Still thinking about this Matas Buzelis bucket. Splits the defenders and switches hands mid-air for the finish. I know I keep saying it, but this just isn’t normal stuff for a guy his size … let alone his age! pic.twitter.com/f9kY0r6gyk

As if seeing the second year forward lead his team to a victory isn’t encouraging enough, you can not help but love the fact that it comes two games removed from one of his worst nights yet. In the second game of the season against Orlando, Buzelis finished with only 3 points after fouling out in less than 13 minutes. Patrick Williams genuinely outplayed him, as the size and talent of the Magic’s frontcourt made Buzelis a non-factor.

However, since that ugly night, Buzelis has jumped right back on the horse. He dropped 16 points in the win over Atlanta before pressing his foot down on the gas harder against Sacramento. For a player still very much coming into his own, that’s exactly what you want to see.

But don’t just take my word for it.

“When things don’t go well for him, he takes it and uses it as a learning experience and comes back better from it. He leans into that stuff. That’s why, quite honestly, he’s been able to progress at the rate he’s progressed at,” Billy Donovan said after Wednesday’s win.

Wednesday night could have been an opportunity where Buzelis looked his age. It could have been a game where matching up against two former franchise centerpieces messed with his psyche. Instead, Matas Buzelis looked like someone who had something to prove. He did not simply show Bulls fans that he is ready to grab the torch left behind by LaVine and DeRozan. He showed them he’s already grabbed it.

ICYMI: Matas Buzelis also got plenty of praise from the Inside the NBA crew after last night’s win!
