Federal agents arrest suspect inside suburban school after chase leads to crashes: Police ...Middle East

NBC Chicago - News

Federal agents conducting immigration enforcement chased a fleeing suspect into a suburban school building, leading to an altercation that unfolded in front of students and staff, authorities said Thursday.

The Gurnee Police Department said it was notified that federal law enforcement agencies were pursuing a vehicle they said was “occupied by individuals who had been previously deported for felony offenses.”

The pursuit, which started outside of Gurnee and led to numerous crashed in multiple suburbs, entered the Gurnee area just before 8:30 a.m., the department said, noting that it was not involved in the chase.

At that time, the vehicle, which police said “was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed,” lost a tire near the intersection of Grand Avenue and First Street, with the tire then striking a vehicle traveling eastbound on Grand Avenue.

The vehicle being pursued by police then continued westbound on Grand Avenue before turning south onto O’Plaine Road, near the entrance to the O’Plaine campus for Warren Township High School.

One person exited the vehicle and ran into the school while a second was taken into custody outside the school.

Warren Township High School Superintendent Dr. Danny Woestman said in a message to parents that “federal agent personnel followed one of the adults into the O’Plaine campus building through a door that was being used appropriately by students and staff who were entering the building as part of their daily routine.”

“A physical altercation happened between Federal agent personnel and the adults. This happened in front of students and staff,” Woestman wrote. “The adults were immediately taken into custody and removed from the campus without further incident. This is all I know at this point.”

Gurnee police said a school resource officer was on campus at the time of the incident and “worked closely with school administration to secure the campus and ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors.”

No lockdown was issued as a result of the event, police said.

“I am very grateful for the staff who acted immediately in the best interest of students,” Woestman said.

Students in need of assistance following the incident were offered support via the school’s “student services” department.

“The Gurnee Police Department understands that developing situations of this nature can be alarming to students, staff, and parents,” the department said in an alert to residents. “Fortunately, no injuries were reported for anyone on campus or to motorists in the area. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Warren Township High School staff, students, and parents for their cooperation and patience throughout the incident.”

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the incident. No further information on the suspects or what led to the chase were available.
