Lori Petty Reflects on the ‘Point Break’ Experience 35 Years Later—and Working With Patrick Swayze

Lori Petty is looking back on filming the '90s surf classic Point Break.

Petty, 62, made her debut in Cadillac Man before skyrocketing to fame as surfer chick Tyler in 1991's Point Break alongsideKeanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. The beloved film, which returns to theaters with a new 4K restoration in August, told the story of an undercover FBI agent, Johnny Utah, who becomes enmeshed with a group of surfers who moonlight as bank robbers. While Petty found great success with films like A League of Their Own and Free Willy after Point Break, the surf staple is still a classic for audiences. And in a rare interview, Petty opened up about making the film.

“It was a dream, for real. It was so much fun. Come on, it was me and 20 wet dudes. It was just so much fun just playing football and training and surfing and kissing. It was just a blast,” Petty told PEOPLE.

Swayze, who died in 2009, was a beacon of adventure on set who would “go skydiving before work.”

“He loved it. He loved riding motorcycles. He loved skydiving. He loved dancing. He loved anything he could do with his body. He was doing ballet in the air. That was really him. So he was someone who just loved to push himself at whatever he did and take it as far as he could. And he was just sweet as pie, and he smelled so good all the time,” Petty recalled, noting that it was “pretty easy to be in love with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.”

Did Petty Know How Big Point Break Would Be?

Petty reflected that while the team had so much fun on the set of Point Break, she had no idea how much of a phenomenon the film would be.

“I knew Patrick Swayze and his talent and legacy, and I knew Keanu’s talent and stardom. But when you’re making a movie, you don’t really think about what it’s going to do,” she told PEOPLE.
