I think we’ll get a look at how good of a head coach Ben Johnson is with how things go for the team with new defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. And I’m not sure it gets more desperate than signing Gardner-Johnson, a defensive back who will join his third different team this season. But hey, stranger things have happened. Frankly, I look forward to seeing how this plays out. Given the injury situation in the Chicago Bears secondary, there is a non-zero chance this goes well for all parties.
If you are curious as to how Chicago’s football team will deploy its newest defensive weapon, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson clued us in during his Wednesday press briefing at Halas Hall:

— SleeperBears (@SleeperBears) October 29, 2025Words from the coach:
“As you can tell, we’ve had some injuries over the last few weeks. Our injury report last week was pretty healthy and then this week, same thing. We’ve got guys dinged up and in and out, so we have an opportunity, and he was available. He’s a good football player. There are a number of us that have been with him in the past, and so it’s a good fit.
“We’ll lock him in in one spot and have him learn the defense. Obviously, he’s been with DA so he should have some familiarity. But he’s also bounced around to a few different other systems over the last few years, and so we’ll see how quickly it comes back to him and whether he’ll be ready to go this week or not.”

While the first-year Bears head coach was measured with his answer about Chauncey Gardner-Johnson’s availability this week, the newest member of Chicago’s defense was pretty straight-forward with it:
C.J. Gardner Johnson on how quickly he can get going in Dennis Allen’s defense:“I’ll see you Sunday.”
— Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) October 29, 2025And in a world where actions speak louder than words, it is worth noting that Bears safety Kevin Byard III told reporters that Gardner-Johnson took every practice rep on Wednesday. That’s fun. All things considered, I expect CJGJ to start and take a play a significant workload in Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Bears Defensive Coordiantor Dennis Allen’s unit will have a lot on their plate on game day. Regardless if Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco plays or not, Chicago’s secondary — which now includes Gardner-Johnson — will be tasked with slowing down Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Best of luck, gents.

Bears fans entered this year thinking about the Ben Johnson hire as one aimed at getting the most out of quarterback Caleb Williams. And while that is still an important aspect of the gig, we shouldn’t overlook the other responsibilities Johnson has to deal with as the top dog. Among those responsibilities is the ability to intigrate new players during the midst of a given season. Sometimes, your team brings in players with a checkered past to fill the gaps. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is a certified agitator. And for a team that has had its share of penalty issues, I’m curious to see how this plays out.
In the end, I can’t shake the feeling that how the head coach handles this situation represents a new test. It is one that I hope he passes with flying colors.
