Spooky season peaks Friday as Halloween kicks off a weekend packed with haunted parties and Día de los Muertos celebrations honoring loved ones across San Diego County. Bonus: Daylight saving time ends Sunday at 2 a.m., which means clocks fall back one hour (to 1 a.m.), giving you an extra hour of sleep to recover from all the festivities.

Want to marry your boo this Halloween? San Diego County is offering themed “Halloweddings” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway. Walk-ins are welcome, with marriage licenses costing $129 and civil ceremonies performed by staff in Halloween attire for $107. Talk about “‘til death do you part.”

For some trick-or-treating hot spots: La Jolla Village hosts its Creepy Candy Crawl from 3-6 p.m. Friday, with participating shops handing out treats and a costume contest featuring prizes from Geppetto’s toy store. Goodie bags are available at the Real Estate Brokers Association, 908 Kline Street. La Mesa Village Association presents its seventh annual Halloween in the Village Friday from 4-6 p.m., where kids can go door-to-door collecting candy from businesses. South Park Horror House, 2962 Laurel Street, offers free entry with candy for kids and 3 Punk Ales beer for parents from 5-10 p.m.

La Jolla Shores Hotel, 8110 Camino Del Oro, goes “paws to the walls” with a Howl-O-Ween Happy Hour and pet costume party at The Shores Restaurant Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Hillcrest transforms into a Halloween wonderland Friday as the annual Nightmare on Normal Street takes over University Avenue from 5-11 p.m. Hit the street party for vendors, food trucks, dancing and a costume contest with $3,500 in prizes. The Gaslamp becomes one of San Diego’s Halloween headquarters for the 21-and-up crowd Friday night. At Barleymash, the Raveyard Halloween Haunt kicks off at 9:30 p.m. with EDM DJs upstairs and Halloween karaoke at Ginger’s downstairs. Side Bar’s Saints & Sinners party invites angels and devils to the dance floor at 9 p.m., while Gaslamplighter hosts a Thriller-themed bash. Start earlier at Margaritaville Hotel’s rooftop at 7 p.m. for Nautical Nightmares, a free pirate-inspired party with DJ Mancat, tarot readings, and, of course, margaritas. Saturday night, Hard Rock Hotel’s Cirque Nocturne takes over three floors from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. with seven themed rooms and more than 15 DJs. Tickets start at $102.

Beyond the Halloween revelry, Día de los Muertos holds special meaning in San Diego – a city shaped by deep cultural ties to Baja California and Mexico. Here is a sampling of countywide events to commemorate the Day of the Dead:

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park caps its month-long Día de los Muertos/Fiesta de Reyes through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with sugar skull workshops, a candlelit procession and Catrina contests among thousands of marigolds and traditional altars.  Downtown Chula Vista’s fifth annual Día de los Muertos Celebration runs Saturday from 3-8 p.m. on Third Avenue. The free event includes lowrider car clubs with trunk ofrendas, live music, food from Mercado by Las Jefas Market and community altars where you can bring photos or mementos to honor loved ones.  The San Diego Master Chorale’s 65th season opens with Echoes, a concert series of music inspired by All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Bankers Hill and 4 p.m. Sunday at San Dieguito United Methodist Church in Encinitas, featuring works by Bach, Dan Forrest and David Conte.

If costumes and altars aren’t your scene, don’t worry – there’s plenty more going on:

San Diego Opera presents Ruggero Leoncavallo’s tragic Pagliacci at the Civic Theatre, telling the story of a traveling performer whose suspicions of his wife’s infidelity blur with the clown he portrays onstage. The opera will be sung in Italian with English and Spanish translations. Tickets start at $47 for children and $77 for adults, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Cyclists can pedal along Highway 101 Saturday during Bike the Coast, starting at Oceanside Pier with routes ranging from 7-mile family rides on the San Luis Rey River Trail to a 100-mile journey through North County beach towns. Registration costs $71-$140 and includes a medal, socks and entry to the Finish Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with live music and a beer garden. Proceeds benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS Initiative.

Mural Project. Advance tickets start at $55 for designated drivers (everything but the booze) and $70 for general admission, with an additional $10 at the door.

Grab your guys, gals and nonbinary pals for the Gays, Theys, and Baes Comedy Show at Diversionary Theatre Sunday at 5 p.m. in University Heights. The lineup features San Diego’s best LGBTQIA+ and ally comedians. Pre-sale tickets are $10, $15 at the door.

Official San Diego watch parties are Offshore Tavern in Bay Park or Grand Slam Pizza in Vista.

San Diego FC travels to Providence Park to face the Portland Timbers Saturday at 6:30 p.m. for Game 2 of the Round One Best-of-3 series.
