ROCHESTER, N.Y. — People in Rochester with family ties to Jamaica have been concerned about their loved ones following Hurricane Melissa.
Basil Creary, owner of Everything Iz Good on East Main Street, has been constantly checking in on his daughter, Jochelle, through video calls.
“They just talk to me about the damage that has been done down there, and they are safe and everything,” Creary said. “Every hour I talk to them and make sure they are safe.”
Jochelle said the area she lives in experienced heavy rain and wind. She mentioned that there was minimal damage in the area, but her water supply was disrupted.
Creary has other family members on the island, including sisters, a niece, and nephews.
“Everything is okay with them. I’m glad to know that everything is safe out there. Just the damage of the country, but everything is okay,” he said.
Eric Ramsay, part owner of Jamaican Spice on Monroe Avenue, has family across the island. His son, Orville, said his aunt manages logistics for the family and made sure they had food before the storm made landfall.
“We spoke to her this morning, and Kingston is not bad, but as for the western end and southwestern end of the island, that is a catastrophe,” Eric Ramsay said.
Ramsay said there is no power in the parts of the island where his family is, and he is waiting to hear from them. Ramsay planned to visit Jamaica in December, and he’s hoping he can still make it there to support his family.
“I’m still anxiously awaiting the results of those families down west,” Ramsay said. “I haven’t heard from them, and I hope everything is okay with them.”
