NEW YORK – Cars parked outside their homes. Menacing phone calls. Interviews with ex-boyfriends on their preferred sexual positions. The disturbing tactics used by Jeffrey Epstein to tarnish his victims’ reputations have been laid bare.
From the first time he was investigated, the paedophile poured millions into his defence, hiring a crack team on an unlimited budget to dig up dirt, including finding out whether teenage girls were on birth control, and rifling through a police chief’s bins.
And recent revelations suggest Prince Andrew played his own part in trying to denigrate his accuser, Virginia Giuffre.
Talking to The i Paper, a Florida lawyer who represented several Epstein victims in 2006 detailed the extent of the paedophile’s nefarious efforts to hide his crimes, saying any involvement from Andrew was “shameful”.
In February 2011, Andrew emailed his accuser’s date of birth and confidential social security number – the US equivalent of a national insurance number – to one of his personal protection officers to investigate, and told his aides that she had a criminal past, according to a report.
A day later, the infamous photo of the Prince with his arm around a 17-year-old Giuffre emerged – and Epstein emailed Andrew to say he was digging up comments from a judge that would undermine her credibility.
Giuffre, whose explosive posthumous memoir has put the Prince under renewed scrutiny, claimed that Epstein forced her to have sex with Andrew three times when she was 17. Andrew has said he has no recollection of meeting her and he denies all allegations.

“It’s shameful that Andrew would be involved in anything like this,” said attorney Spencer Kuvin, who witnessed Epstein’s smear tactics first-hand in 2006. “It just goes to show his true character.”
Kuvin worked with several Epstein accusers when the child abuser was first investigated by police in Palm Beach, Florida for having sex with schoolgirls.
Epstein poured millions of dollars into his defence. His aim, according to Kuvin, was to pressure his accusers into not testifying and shut down the criminal case.
The lawyer told The i Paper that Epstein hired a large team of investigators on an unlimited budget who went about digging up any dirt they could find.
They were so aggressive that they interviewed his accuser’s ex-boyfriends on what sexual acts and sexual positions they liked, Kuvin revealed. “It was to show that they were sexually active,” he said, adding that some were as young as 14 when they were abused.
Epstein’s lawyers requested documents from Planned Parenthood, a major provider of abortions in the US, to see if the girls were on birth control.
“Two of Epstein’s people turned up at the restaurant where one of my clients worked as a hostess,” Kuvin said. “They just sat there all day staring at her because she refused to talk to them.
“In another case, Epstein had a black SUV park outside one client’s trailer and put their lights on at night so it shone into her room.
“The former head of the Palm Beach police, Joseph Recarey, told me Epstein’s investigators went through his trash looking for dirt on him or the investigation”.

In a letter to Recarey published in legal filings, Epstein attorney Alan Dershowitz wrote of one victim: “Our investigation had discovered at least one of her websites,” referring to her Myspace page.
“You will note that she, herself, has chosen to go by the nickname of ‘pimp juice’.”
Epstein’s efforts worked. Instead of being indicted for sex trafficking by federal prosecutors, a crime for which he could have been jailed for life, he entered into a sweetheart plea deal where he admitted two counts of soliciting minors for prostitution and served just 15 months in a state prison.
Thanks to Epstein’s “dream team” of lawyers – which included Harvard law professor Dershowitz, and Ken Starr, who brought the impeachment case against former president Bill Clinton – the deal included terms that were unusual and extremely preferential to Epstein. This included an agreement not to prosecute four named co-conspirators.
Kuvin said: “In 30 years of doing this I have never seen anything like it. These victims were humiliated, pressured and scared. It was a full-on onslaught to get them to stop talking and shut up. It was a huge, huge level of intrusion that was just devastating for these girls.

“Andrew wanted the investigation against him shut down as well. It was an embarrassment for him.”
The Metropolitan Police has said it is looking into the claim that Andrew was trying to find damaging material for a smear campaign against Giuffre.
Epstein employed similar measures against Giuffre, who killed herself in April aged 41.
In early 2015, Giuffre made fresh allegations anonymously, in US legal papers, that Epstein and his “madam” Ghislaine Maxwell personally called her to make menacing legal threats, she has said.
In 2019, another accuser, Maria Farmer, claimed that after she was sexually assaulted by Epstein and Maxwell in 1996, Maxwell made a series of menacing phone calls threatening her career, and her life.

In an email Epstein wrote to Maxwell on 12 January 2015, he said: “You can issue a reward to any of Virginia’s friends, acquaintances, family that come forward to help prove her allegations are false.”
Epstein somehow obtained Giuffre’s sealed juvenile records and co-ordinated with a US newspaper, the New York Daily News, to publish a story about a previous allegation she made that she was raped by two friends in 1998.
The alleged incident, which happened when Giuffre was just 14, was not pursued by prosecutors because of the “victim’s lack of credibility and no substantial likelihood of success at trial”, the confidential court records stated.
At the time McCawley, Giuffre’s lawyer, issued a furious statement saying that she had been raped, adding that “to be victimised all over again with the leak of sealed juvenile records is disgraceful”.
Emails released last month by Bloomberg made it clear that Maxwell and Epstein co-ordinated to plant the story.
