They wouldn’t dare, would they? And that applies to both sides in this rumoured negotiation.
The reports that Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson have finally agreed to be prised, kicking and screaming, out of Royal Lodge – their sprawling mansion in Windsor Great Park – but have demanded TWO homes instead, defy belief. And if the King and the Palace are even considering this greedy proposal, they should think again.
The public, the press and several prominent members of Parliament have made it clear: however much Andrew continues to protest his innocence of all claims to do with the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, his credibility is shot.
He is a proven liar who commands no respect. And the same can now be said of his ex-wife.
I have to confess that over the weekend, I had moments of feeling just a touch uneasy about kicking this entitled couple when they are being subjected to such an intense pile-on. I’ve never witnessed a member of the Royal Family being so heavily criticised, including by me. Lambasted from all sides, labelled a national disgrace and not daring to show their faces in public, surely they have learned their lesson?
Not a bit of it, it seems. Up they pop like Punch and Judy, if the reports are true, arrogantly demanding not one, but two, multi-million pound houses in the very royal surroundings of Windsor Great Park. A stone’s throw from Windsor Castle itself.
It would be a grave mistake for the Palace to give in to this outlandish request. It’s vital that they read public opinion and cut both Andrew and Sarah loose to fend for themselves. After all, they are mature adults who clearly have the funds to take care of their needs.

Under the terms of the lease of Royal Lodge, the Prince will be entitled to more than half a million pounds in compensation for the repairs he paid for when he moved in. That would buy him a nice little place – perhaps Woking would suit? I hear they do a nice line in pizzas there. And Sarah recently sold a Belgravia mews house for a sum reported to be over £4m. That will come in handy if she now wants to buy a separate place from her “bestest friend” and ex-husband.
The Epstein scandal is far from over. The authorities in New York are still trawling through hundreds of emails. There are moves to have a parliamentary debate about formally stripping Andrew of the Dukedom he has been forced to relinquish. And there is likely to be an official inquiry into the rent the Prince has – or has not – paid for Royal Lodge over the past 22 years.
The optics of Andrew and Sarah settling themselves into two beautiful, large new homes would be a disaster. To grant them Frogmore Cottage, recently renovated by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the tune of £2.4 million, and Adelaide Cottage, which the Prince and Princess of Wales are currently vacating, would be a slap in the face to all the people they have lied to and to the many young girls abused by Epstein.
And if Andrew doesn’t fancy a little place in Woking, perhaps he should move to Abu Dhabi, where he has apparently been offered the run of a fully staffed Palace by his friend, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
With a swimming pool, gym, cinema and six bedrooms, there would surely be room for Sarah to squeeze in as well?
The King and the Palace are already under criticism for having been too slow in taking action against Andrew. Now is not the time to pander to his inflated ego.
