Irwin spoke with People and explained that photography became an individual passion for him at a very young age. He has followed in his father's footsteps with a passion for wildlife, and he noted it's "a legacy that is huge and that has spanned generations."
While he believes it's a "privilege" to continue that work, he has also thrived in embracing photography, which is more for himself. He suggested that growing up surrounded by cameras gave him "a great appreciation for that craft."
One time, Irwin faced a hazardous situation related to his photography. He explained he was flying through Nairobi, and he had checked his case filled with his camera gear. Unfortunately, he noted, the hard case was too big to be a carry-on.
After landing, Irwin's case didn't come out with the rest of the flight's luggage. "Out of the corner of my eye, I see the Pelican case. It's on a trolley and someone's walking with it out the front door, stealing it."
Irwin noted that the case has "got a very clear look, it's got all the stickers on so you couldn't mistake [it as] someone else's."
He took matters into his own hands, approaching the person who was trying to take the case for himself. Irwin recalled, "He looks at me and he looks around at everyone and gives it to me and then just takes off running."
Luckily, the situation didn't escalate further, and Irwin recovered his equipment. However, he told People, "This happens all the time. It happens everywhere, all around the world."
Irwin sticks with it, though, because it's "a real passion."
"I get to take what I get to experience and then amplify that for the world, to show them, 'This is the beauty of the natural world, this is what we need to protect.'"
