Local soccer teams capture district titles (High school scoreboard – Oct. 25-26, 2015)

BOYS SOCCER

DIVISION III

    District Finals

    Canfield 2, Akron North 1 — The Cardinals captured the district championship on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Akron North. No stats were submitted. Canfield now heads to Twinsburg, where it will face Aurora in the Division III, Region 9 semifinal on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

    Howland 2, University School 1 — The Tigers added to their decorated history with another district championship, defeating University School on Saturday. Goals from Luca Naples (PK) and Mitch Gentis, as well as an assist from Manny Hazimihalis helped carry Howland to victory. Carter Jones also finished with three saves in net. The Tigers now head to the Division III, Region 10 semifinal, where they will face CVCA on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Serpentini Stadium at North Royalton.

    DIVISION IV

    District Finals

    Cardinal Mooney 2, Poland 1 — The Cardinals held off the Bulldogs behind goals from Donovan Whetstone and Dimitri Zoumis to capture the district championship on Saturday night. It was Mooney head coach Matt Britton’s 150th career victory. Michael Hostal scored the lone goal for Poland, which ends the season at 14-2-4 overall. The Cardinals will now head to Ravenna to face Chagrin Falls in the Division IV, Region 15 semifinal on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

    Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 2, West Branch 1 — The Warriors fell in the district final to NDCL on Saturday, ending the season at 14-5 overall. No stats were submitted.

    DIVISION V

    District Finals

    Champion 1, Northwestern 0 — Hunter Maylone’s goal, off an assist from Dante Dueley, was all the Golden Flashes needed to capture the district title against Northwestern on Saturday. Champion now heads to the Division V, Region V semifinal on Wednesday at 7 p.m., where it will take on Rootstown at Byers Field at Parma.

    DIVISION III

    District Final

    Medina Buckeye 1, Canfield 0 (OT) — The Cardinals’ season came to an end with an overtime loss to Medina Buckeye. No stats were submitted. Canfield ends the season at 12-7 overall.

    DIVISION IV

    District Finals

    Niles 2, Perry 1 — The Red Dragons (19-0-1) claimed the district crown after getting goals from Kherington Stanford and Maddie Yost. Taylor Bickerstaff had an assist, and Grace Guarnieri made six saves. Niles will make the drive to Ravenna to face Fairview in the regional semifinal on Tuesday.

    Poland 1, Berkshire 0 — The Bulldogs went back-to-back, winning their second straight championship with their victory over Berkshire on Saturday. Delaney Ankeles scored the contest’s lone goal to lift Poland to the regional rounds. Lily McDonald finishes with eight saves in goal. The Bulldogs will now head to Ashland on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to take on Gahanna Columbus Academy in the Division IV, Region 16 semifinal.

    Chagrin Falls 3, West Branch 2 — The Warriors fell in the district final to Chagrin Falls on Saturday, ending the season at 15-1-2 overall. No stats were submitted.

    District Finals

    Cardinal Mooney 4, Osborne Academy 0 — The Cardinals won their second straight district championship. Mia Williams scored twice for the Cardinals, and Leah Hudak and Francesca Cassese also found the back of the net. Mooney will now take on Kirtland on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Boardman in the Division V, Region 20 semifinal.

    Kirtland 3, Warren JFK 1 — The Eagles fell in the district final to Kirtland on Saturday, ending the season at 15-3 overall. No stats were submitted.

    Columbia 4, Columbiana 0 — The Clippers fell in the district final to Columbia on Saturday, ending the season at 11-6-3 overall. No stats were submitted.
