ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The People’s Choice Kitchen on Brooks Avenue fed first responders and anyone struggling to make ends meet on Sunday in collaboration with the nonprofit Service the Community.
While the event was originally intended just for first responders, kitchen owner Evangela Stanley decided to open it up to anyone in need, especially federal workers who aren’t being paid amid the government shutdown. Ronald Hall from Service the Community spoke about the importance of thanking public servants.
“You know, the first responders are the first person we call when we need something, and we wanted to do something to give back to them to say ‘thank you for all that you guys do’,” Hall said. “Then we open it up for the entire community, because as you know, there’s stuff going on down in Washington, D.C. with the government being shut down and, you know, the TSA people haven’t gotten paid and the military hasn’t gotten paid, so we opened up for everybody.”
People were served food, including jerk chicken, mac and cheese, and pizza, at People’s Choice Kitchen, with no questions asked.
