In early October, the 41-year-old former NFL star shared a social media post addressing his Jets and Buckeyes communities, revealing that his 2006 diagnosis was caused by a genetic defect, and that he was undergoing dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant.

“I always knew this day would come,” he wrote, “but I thought I would have more time.”

Mangold then asked fans with his shared type O blood type to consider donating a kidney. Fans quickly offered help and signed up to determine if they might be a match for the struggling former Jets star.

Nick Mangold lost his battle this weekend, but his impact will endure. Rest in peace to a sports legend whose influence was felt on and off the field.
