Legendary actor Anthony Hopkins has been sober for nearly 50 years, and now he's sharing more details about the terrifying moment that made him realize he needed to stop drinking alcohol, or someone was going to get hurt.
The 87-year-old Silence of the Lambs star remembered being "drunk and driving [his] car in California in a blackout, [with] no clue where [he] was going," in a chat with The New York Times' The Interviewpodcast on Oct. 25.
"I realized that I could have killed somebody — or myself, which I didn’t care about."
- Anthony Hopkins on realizing he needed to stop drinking
"I realized that I could have killed somebody — or myself, which I didn’t care about,” he shared solemnly. That moment changed everything for the The Lion in Winter actor and began his sobriety journey. “I came to my senses and said to an ex-agent of mine at this party in Beverly Hills, ‘I need help.’ ”
He also revealed he heard a "vocal, male, reasonable, like a radio voice" speak to him, and from then on, he no longer had a desire to drink alcohol. “It was 11 o’clock precisely," he shared. "This is the spooky part: Some deep, powerful thought or voice spoke to me from inside and said: ‘It’s all over. Now you can start living. And it has all been for a purpose, so don’t forget one moment of it.’ ”

“The craving to drink was taken from me, or left," he said. "Now I don’t have any theories except divinity or that power that we all possess inside us that creates us from birth, life force, whatever it is. It’s a consciousness, I believe. That’s all I know.”
Nearly 50 years later — Hopkins celebrated 49 years sober in December 2024 — he's still committed to his sobriety journey and proud of how far he's come.

"Actors in those days — Peter O’Toole, Richard Burton, all of them — I remember those drinking sessions, thinking: 'This is the life. We’re rebels, we’re outsiders, we can celebrate,' " he said of his old pals. "And at the back of the mind is: 'It’ll kill you as well.' Those guys I worked with have all gone."
"Approaching 88 years of age, I wake up in the morning going: 'I’m still here. How?’ ” he questioned. “I don’t know. But whatever’s keeping me here, thank you very much! Much obliged!”
Anthony Hopkins' new memoir, We Did OK, Kid, will be released on Nov. 4, 2025.
