Arik Gilbert, one of the country’s most heralded recruits in the class of 2020, is back in the news once again for legal reasons.
According to CBSSports.com’s Cody Nagel, Gilbert has been arrested in the Savannah, Ga. area on shoplifting and obstruction allegations. Gilbert currently faces a bond of $3,500.
Gilbert, who hasn’t played football since 2022, was signed by LSU and enrolled in January 2020. In 8 games, he made 35 catches for 368 yards and 2 touchdowns, but opted out before the 2020 season ended due to injury.
After entering the transfer portal and originally committing to Florida, Gilbert switched his commitment to Georgia. He didn’t play a down in 2021 as he tended to an undisclosed personal matter. In 2022, he appeared in 3 games.
Following the 2022 season, Gilbert re-entered the transfer portal, landing at Nebraska. But he was arrested for an alleged burglary at a liquor and vape shop before the resulting charges were reduced. Later, he was arrested on burglary and obstruction charges in Lumpkin County, Ga., about 65 miles north of Atlanta. He ultimately saw no playing time with the Cornhuskers.
Gilbert is now at the FCS level, playing for Savannah State, his fourth school. In 6 games with the Tigers, he has made 19 catches for 258 yards.
