Shreyas Iyer suffers freak injury taking the best catch of the tour, dismissing Alex Carey

Team India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer took a stunning catch to dismiss Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Saturday, October 25. However, the 30-year-old injured himself while completing the catch and had to walk off the field.

Team India skipper Shubman Gill lost the toss once more. Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and chose to bat first. The home team made just one change after securing the series 2-0. Meanwhile, the visiting team made two changes to the playing XI, recalling Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna.

Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head provided a solid start, adding 50 runs off 45 balls. However, Mohammed Siraj broke the stand by dismissing Head in the final over of the powerplay. Head had to depart to the dressing room after scoring 29 runs off 25 balls.

Axar Patel made an impact in his second over, removing Marsh for 41 runs, including five fours and one six. Following this, Matthew Short and Matt Renshaw added 36 runs for the third wicket.

Washington Sundar then dismissed Short for 30 off 41 balls, including two boundaries. This wicket left Australia at 124/3 after 22.3 overs, putting pressure back on the home side.

Alex Carey and Matt Renshaw added 59 runs for the fourth wicket. Harshit Rana broke the partnership by dismissing Carey on the fourth ball of the 34th over. Carey attempted an aggressive shot but ended up mistiming it.

Shreyas Iyer sprinted from backward point and held onto a two-handed catch despite the ball slipping slightly. Iyer fell awkwardly and injured his left hip, requiring immediate attention from the physio before walking off the field. Carey was dismissed for 24 off 37 deliveries, including a boundary.

Washington Sundar Removes Well-Set Matt Renshaw

A few overs later, Washington Sundar took the wicket of Matt Renshaw, who scored 56 off 58 balls. Renshaw had been looking comfortable after reaching his half-century, but he misjudged a full delivery that skidded in and was given out LBW.

The dismissal came in the 37th over, with Sundar delivering a ball angling into the left-hander. Renshaw attempted to flick it but missed. A review confirmed there was no edge, and ball tracking showed the delivery hitting the leg stump.

At the time of writing, Australia were 197/5 after 37 overs, with Cooper Connolly and Mitchell Owen at the crease. Sundar has been India’s best performer in the middle overs, completing a 10-over spell conceding 44 runs while picking up two crucial wickets.
