ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Early voting in New York state begins Saturday, October 25th allowing registered voters to cast their ballots ahead of Election Day on Nov. 4. News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin visited the Monroe County Board of Elections to gather essential information for voters.
“Our bipartisan Board of Elections will ensure that your votes are counted fairly and everyone’s vote counts,” said Peter Elder, Republican commissioner for the Monroe County Board of Elections.
This election season, voters in the six-county region will focus on town and city-level races. The lead office on the ballot is the sheriff of Monroe County, but voters will also elect many town officials, Elder said.
Voters will also see candidates for mayor, judicial officers, school commissioners, and city council members on the ballot. Elder and Jackie Ortiz, the Democratic commissioner, oversee the Board of Elections in Monroe County, although Ortiz was unavailable for an interview.
“There are 13 sites available for voters to vote at. They can vote at any site,” Elder said.
Voter turnout for local elections has been declining, with Elder estimating it might be in the lower 20 percent range. He expects a moderate turnout of 185,000 to 200,000 voters.
Elder advised voters to visit the Monroe County Board of Elections website to check voter registration, view sample ballots, and find other important information. “If you applied for an absentee ballot, you can see the status of that ballot. There’s a lot of information there so I would encourage people to use that,” he said.
This is the first general election using new voting machines, which they will be keeping a close eye on.
“What we are looking for is to make sure that under this type of stress that these machines operate well. We have technicians all around the county, just in case.” Elder said.
One upgrade over the old ones is the new equipment is friendlier to use for people with disabilities.
“These machines are all ballot marking devices. They are all accessible for voters with disabilities. If someone who is a wheelchair user, can wheel right up to these machines, or if someone is blind or visually impaired or deaf.
Early voting continues through Nov. 2.
New York’s even year election law will take effect next year. It moves most town and county elections from odd-numbered years to even. For most towns, those will be races for town supervisor, town clerk and highway supervisor.
