ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Parents and the teacher’s union are speaking out after multiple fights broke out at East High School. A second employee was hurt during the fights, officials said. The union is calling for increased safety measures for both students and staff.
“If one person fights, then you got friends and then your friends are going to jump in, then you got a melee such as at East High,” Mary Conyer, a grandparent and former parent liaison for the Rochester City School District, said.
Conyer, who worked for the city school district for five years, is an East High School graduate. Her grandchildren attended summer school there. She emphasized the ongoing nature of these issues, saying, “My reaction to the fact that kids are fighting outside of school and inside of school, it’s been happening for over 20 years. This is not new.”
“The school system has a responsibility to take care of the children,” Conyer said.
Conyer mentioned New York State implemented the Safe Schools Act in 2000, partly due to a teacher being hurt during student fights. The act requires school districts to develop and implement comprehensive plans to ensure a safe learning environment.
“Our kids are fighting like crazy. So do we have to revisit those plans and see what went wrong or are they being implemented at all?” Conyer said.
Margaret Sergent, second vice president of the Rochester Teacher’s Union and Health and Safety Chair, confirmed that a vice principal was also hurt in the fights. She advised they recommend teachers should not intervene in fights.
“What happened yesterday with a teacher getting injured and also a vice principal, when you step in between two angry individuals and get caught in the melee then you are going to end up getting hurt also,” Sergent said.
Sergent noted that fights are occurring more frequently, even with a police presence at dismissal and is advocating for increased security.
“More security guards because there is not enough,” she said.
Officers arrested a 16-year-old, who is not a East High Student, in connection to one of the fights. They continue to investigate what caused the fights with help from the school district.
The teacher and vice principal that were hurt will be okay.
