HENRIETTA, N.Y. — A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place Thursday for the East River Road Improvement Project, which has been in development for more than six years.
The ceremony was held at the East River Road entrance to the Rochester Institute of Technology. Officials said the project aimed to enhance safety and connectivity throughout Henrietta.
The initiative began in 2018 after a deaf RIT student was struck by a box truck. Crews added extended turn lanes, new intersections, and traffic lights. Improvements also included bike-friendly shoulders, signalized crosswalks, and updated signage was installed throughout the area.
Tom O’Brien, a local resident, said he frequently witnessed crashes at the intersection of East River Road and Farnum Lane, and he’s glad it was made safer for students.
With RIT’s help, a 1.75-mile multi-use path was opened for students. The project has made the area safer and more accessible for the community.
Officials said there are remaining funds from the project that will be used to extend improvements south of the Thruway.
