ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A 79-year-old local woman is being charged hundreds of dollars by E-ZPass because a New York State Police car has the exact same license plate as her car.
Lauren McGuire points to her aunt’s car, which has had the license plate 1M24 for 50 years. 1M plates were special plates for people who worked for Monroe County. However, her aunt is now getting charged every time a State Police car goes into the E-ZPass congestion zone in midtown Manhattan.
“Oh my God, yes. We’re up to $500 now,” McGuire said.
One of the E-ZPass tickets shows a photo of the trooper car with the license plate 1M24, identical to her aunt’s plate. McGuire now has a stack of E-ZPass bills.
Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “Wouldn’t you think that the state has some sort of database that could catch duplicate plates?”Lauren McGuire: “I know they have a database that they catch duplicate plates. And that means no one is looking at the tickets in comparison to the database. Because they could clearly see this State Police car is not a little white Acura.”
This issue has happened before. Barbara Lipsky in Brighton has license plate 1M20 and was charged more than $100 because a State Police car has the same plate. Steve Green in Fairport also got charged because another car in New York City had the same plate. Both got refunded after News10NBC’s stories.
The first bill to Lauren’s aunt was in July and the latest was two weeks ago.
Berkeley Brean: “But now we know this has happened to at least four people.”Lauren McGuire: “Oh really? That’s a lot. It could be happening all the time. It just means there is nobody looking. And someone should be looking. With $500 in tickets, somebody should be looking.”
E-ZPass in Manhattan is run by the city’s Transportation Authority. In an email, the MTA wrote, “The charges are being reversed, and she should not be receiving any future erroneous tolls.”
State Police wrote in an email, “This issue is related to State Police patrol vehicles that operate in the congestion pricing zone in Manhattan. When this problem surfaced earlier this year, we worked with MTA and E-ZPass to ensure citizens would not be charged tolls for our vehicles in the congestion pricing zone. Plate number 1M-24 was included as part of this fix. While we don’t yet know what caused the owner of this plate number to be charged, we have already contacted MTA and E-ZPass and they are correcting this issue.”
News10NBC also asked the state DMV if it has a database that can catch duplicates.
State Police cars are supposed to be exempt from E-ZPass, so no one knew some of the trooper cars had the identical license plate as people in the Rochester area until E-ZPass was set up in Manhattan and started charging police cars this year.
