Ukraine says Storm Shadow missiles used to strike Russian chemical plant

Ukraine’s military says it has used UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles in an attack on a chemical plant in Russia.

“A massive combined missile-and-air strike was carried out, including with air-launched Storm Shadow missiles that penetrated Russia’s air defence system,” the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said in a statement on Telegram.

“The results of the strike are being assessed,” it said.

It described the plant, in southern Russia’s Bryansk region, as a “key facility” producing gunpowder, explosives and rocket fuel.

Pictures on social media appeared to show smoke rising.

The Russian Defence Ministry has not confirmed Ukraine’s attack but said in a Telegram post on Tuesday evening that its air defence units destroyed 57 Ukrainian drones over the Bryansk region in the space of four hours.

The ministry rarely reports any damages inflicted by Ukraine in the war that Russia started with its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of Bryansk region, said in a Telegram post that Ukraine was attacking the region with drones and missiles on Tuesday afternoon.

He added that no one was injured in the attack and no damage was reported.

British-made Storm Shadow missiles were fired into Russia by Ukraine for the first time in November 2024, in defiance of Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats.

Around 12 of the long-range missiles were used by Kyiv’s forces in the Kursk region of Russia for the first time.

Russia has also launched an overnight air attack on Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital, said.

“Stay in shelters!” Klitschko said in a post.

Witnesses told the Reuters news agency they heard explosions in what sounded like air defence units in operation.

It comes as Donald Trump said his plan for a swift meeting with Vladimir Putin was on hold because he doesn’t want it to be a “waste of time.”

The decision to hold off on the meeting in Budapest, Hungary, which Trump had announced last week, was made following a call Monday between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“I don’t want to have a wasted meeting,” Trump said. “I don’t want to have a waste of time — so we’ll see what happens.”

Kremlin pokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that “preparation is needed, serious preparation” before a meeting.

Trump suggested that decisions about the meeting would be made in the coming days.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been trying to strengthen Ukraine’s position by seeking long-range Tomahawk missiles from the US, although Trump has waffled on whether he would provide them.

“We need to end this war, and only pressure will lead to peace,” Zelensky said Tuesday in a Telegram post.
