Saturday, October 18th & Sunday, October 19th Tokyo Aquatics Center SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Entries Day 1 Recap ResultsDay two of the 2025 Japanese Short Course Championships concluded tonight from the Tokyo Aquatics Center, site of swimming action at the 2020 Olympic Games.
Yesterday, we saw 18-year-old Mizuki Hirai fire off a new national record in the women’s 50m back and she followed that up with a decisive victory in the 100m butterfly tonight.
University of Tennessee’s Hirai ripped a time of 55.50 to beat the field in the sole result of the pack to dip under the 57-second barrier.
Hirai opened in 25.78 and closed in 29.72 to get the job done. Hiroko Makino claimed the silver in 57.17 and IM ace Shiho Matsumoto rounded out the podium in 57.27.
Hirai’s performance checked in as a new lifetime best, slicing .11 off her former PB of 55.61 notched at last year’s Short Course World Championships. That outing rendered the Olympian the 5th-place finisher in Budapest.
She already ranked as Japan’s #2 performer in history in this event but tonight’s result brought her even closer to Rikako Ikee‘s current national standard of 55.31 from 2018. She now ranks 3rd in the world on the season.

The 23-year-old split 25.49/27.56 to get the job done, establishing a new lifetime best in the process. The versatile swimmer now ranks as Japan’s 6th-swiftest 100m freestyler of all time.
Yume Kamino settled for silver this evening in 53.81 and Aya Funakoshi also landed on the podium with 54.25, good enough for bronze.
On the men’s side, it was national record holder Katsuhiro Matsumoto who got to the wall first in the 100m free.
The 28-year-old veteran turned in a time of 46.75 (22.61/24.14) as the winner, with his result just off his lifetime best of 46.72 from the 2022 Short Course World Championships. That relay lead-off rendered him Japan’s 3rd-fastest male in history.
Tonight it was Shuya Matsumoto getting the silver in 47.07 and Seki Kaiya bagging the bronze in 47.16.
Kaito Tabuchi denied 18-year-old Kazushi Imafuku the gold in the men’s 400m free.
The former notched 3:40.07 to the latter’s 3:42.46, as Ando Yo rounded out the top three in 3:42.73.
Tabuchi’s best-ever outing entering these championships rested at the 3:41.35 from this competition last year, so he managed to drop more than a second to become Japan’s #4 performer of all time.

The women’s 100m back saw Narumi Nagaoka claim the victory, punching a time of 57.62 in a narrow win over Ryoko Kamei. Kamei settled for silver in 57.69 as Mairin Sasao earned bronze in 58.04. The men’s 100m back top three were separated by less than half a second. Yura Masataka touched first in 51.05 followed by Ryo Hayasaka‘s time of 51.47 and Ryota Maejima‘s result of 51.49. Fly specialist Makino went off-script and raced in the women’s 50m breast where she claimed gold in 29.98. Junior Pan Pacific Championships gold medalist Kotomi Kato followed up on her 100m breast victory last night with a win in the 200m distance. She stopped the clock at 2:20.69 to get the job done. So Ogata was too quick to catch in the men’s 200m IM, although the top three performers were separated by just .22. Ogata nailed 1:53.23 just ahead of Numata Yorihito‘s effort of 1:53.35. Yuta Watanabe also landed on the podium in 1:53.45 as the bronze medalist. Miyu Namba earned bronze in the women’s 100m free last night but upgraded to gold in the 400m free. She nabbed the top prize in 4:03.18, with Hina Kuno next to the wall in 4:04.27.
