Coby White FINALLY Practices, Billy Donovan on Noa Essengue, Big NBA News, and Other Bulls Bullets

If you need me, I’ll be at Soldier Field this afternoon watching the Chicago Bears dismantle the New Orleans Saints! And by dismantle, I obviously mean allow the score to stay uncomfortably close and potentially ruin my Sunday.

GO CHICAGO SPORTS!

We are only three days away from the Chicago Bulls tipping off their 2025-26 season, which means we could be only three days away from Coby White buckets! The team was initially hoping to get their leading scorer back on the floor late in preseason, but ultimately decided to keep him on the sidelines for all five games. White suffered a mild calf strain in August and has taken his rehab extra slow as he prepared for his contract year. Nevertheless, the Bulls have remained steadfast in the plan to welcome White back on opening night, and they took a step in the right direction on Saturday. White practiced for the first time with the team since training camp began. He shared with reporters that his calf felt fine during the controlled contact work. Still, the man himself has yet to commit fully to suiting up for Tuesday’s meeting with the Detroit Pistons:

“We’ll see. We’ll see. I’m still ramping up,” White said. “This is the first time I’ve been up and down in a month and a half, since August. It’s in the works. It’s definitely being talked about, me playing the season opener, so we’ll see.”

Look, as much as I would love to see White back on the floor, what’s the rush? This season seems to be far less about the results and far more about development and evaluation. If the safest thing to do is hold him out for the first or second game, I’m not going to complain about it. Four days of full-speed practice and contact isn’t necessarily that much time, especially when you’ve been out of the loop since August. Likewise, the Bulls are trying to play fast and physical from the jump this season. That doesn’t sound like a particularly great combo for a guy coming off a calf injury! At the end of the day, I just hope that everyone continues to proceed with caution. Mandatory Credit: Matt Marton-Imagn Images You know you did something right when you have over 5 minutes of preseason highlights. I seriously can not wait for Year 2 of Matas Buzelis to officially begin. Will there inevitably be some bumps in the road? Absolutely, the guy is still only 21 years old. But what he showed over the last five games is that he’s ready to make an even greater impact on both ends of the floor. I’ll keep saying it – I really do think we have a star on our hands here, folks. How soon until Noa Essengue gets a taste of his first real NBA action? All things considered, he looked far more comfortable than anticipated in the preseason, but I’m not sure anyone expected that to lead to immediate playing time. Head coach Billy Donovan made clear that Essengue still has a long way to go before we see him consistently:

“I think right now with Noa he’s done a great job. He’s got a lot to continue to improve upon and grow upon. I think right now there are clearly guys ahead of him in the rotation. I think the biggest thing for him right now this year to me is how can we help him improve his development? What’s going to be the biggest thing, whether it’s time in the G League, time up here, in practice, contact practices, we just have to keep helping him develop … I’m encouraged with him because I think he has a really good IQ and knows how to play,” Donovan said of the rookie.

In other words, I wouldn’t expect Essengue to follow the same path as Matas Buzelis. While Donovan took things slow with the 2024 lottery pick, Buzelis still ended up appearing in 80 of 82 games. I don’t expect Essengue to get the same kind of early short stints. Instead, he’ll probably spend a lot more time in the G League throughout November and December. Hopefully, by the second half of the year, however, we can see him in the rotation a lot more. You have to give him some big league development minutes eventually. The Chicago Bulls’ first few weeks of the regular season are far from easy, but one of their more winnable matchups may have just gotten even easier. The Sacramento Kings will start the year without Domantas Sabonis, who is dealing with a hamstring injury. The Bulls face this Western Conference version of themselves in the fourth game of the year.

Kings say Domantas Sabonis has a grade 1 hamstring strain and will be reevaluated in one week.

Spears (@MarcJSpears) October 18, 2025 In other NBA news, ESPN’s Shams Charania announced on Sunday morning that the Houston Rockets have officially agreed to a two-year extension with Kevin Durant. Shockingly, the two sides agreed on a $90.0 million deal that is well below Durant’s potential max. Charania said that Durant came to the Rockets knowing he would take less in an effort to provide the team with more financial flexibility that could help foster a better long-term relationship. It sure feels like this is something we could start to see more and more around the NBA, particularly as front offices struggle to build out contenders under the new salary cap restrictions. With that said … don’t expect any discounts next season when the Bulls have loads of money to spend. Stars only give proven teams the benefit of the doubt!

    — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) October 19, 2025 There are so many players from the 80s/90s who have a highlight reel that would make you question whether they could succeed in today’s NBA. Michael Jordan is not one of them, which is precisely why he remains the GOAT. Watching what he was able to do is still jaw-dropping. Sure, someone could argue that what he would see today defensively is a whole lot better, but are we positive? The league has never been more offense-friendly. Even if that was the case, just look at how Jordan moves! One of the most skilled and fluid athletes we’ve ever seen.

Jonathan Towes sat down to talk about his highly anticipated comeback. The further we go into the Bears’ season, the more it feels like Colston Loveland could begin to make his presence felt.
