Game of the Week: University, Windsor meet in regular season clash

Nonconference matches are normally not emphasized this late into the girls volleyball season.

Then again, when Windsor plays host to University at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, it won’t be any ordinary nonconference match.

The match should have a postseason-like feel, as the Wizards sit in second and the Bulldogs are seventh in Class 4A Selection and Seeding Index, which will be used to determine postseason seeding in a couple weeks.

Windsor is 12-4 overall, 7-3 in the 5A/4A Northern Conference. University is 14-3 overall, 9-2 in the 4A/3A/2A Patriot League.

The two squads are easily two of the top programs locally, and both figure to be legitimate contenders when the championship is decided in the middle of November.

While the Wizards are a longtime 4A contender, the Bulldogs are in just their second season in 4A after decades of success in 3A.

A year ago, Windsor narrowly got the better of University, 3-2, in another high-profile, late regular season match, before beating the Bulldogs again, 3-0, in a tournament just before the postseason.

On Tuesday, the Bulldogs will be hungry to prove they belong in the elite tier of 4A, while the Wizards try to show they are a cut above their fellow local powerhouse.
