No Goal? Really? Learning to Finish, Donato’s Role, Prospect Highlights, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Let’s start where things felt like they ended last night against the Canucks. With 5:12 remaining in regulation and the game tied at two, it appears Tyler Bertuzzi poked in a go-ahead goal for the Blackhawks. The closest official, however, immediately waived it off as no goal. He claimed goaltender interference on the play. We went to a media break, and then the Blackhawks challenged the call. It was upheld. Here’s some more video as a painful reminder:

After the game, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said he would challenge the call again tomorrow and do it ten times out of ten. Here’s what Connor Murphy told us he got as an explanation from referee Kelly Sutherland:

“The puck was partially covered, so they looked at that as a dead puck even though the whistle still wasn’t blown. I understand the ruling, but I’ve seen a lot of goals…[where] you’re battling, your goalie’s got it half under equipment, and a guy just gives it one poke and it goes in. I didn’t see the goalie’s pad go in; it was more the puck first. So I thought it easily could’ve been counted.”

Bertuzzi’s take on the call and review?

Bertuzzi on the no goal: “I won’t comment because I’ll probably get fined. I think it was not that great of a call. That’s what I think.”

I thought it was a bad call in the first place and it standing up thru review is a bad look for the review process. Murphy was spot on.

My other two cents from last night: the Canucks are a much, much better team than the Blues. They put the hammer down in Dallas the night before beating the Blackhawks. There were a lot of things that I actually liked a great deal from the game last night. In fact, I feel like the Blackhawks played a better game in some areas than they did against St. Louis.

    — HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) October 18, 2025 I also appreciate Blashill and Murphy saying they had a team in the second half of a back-to-back, played a nearly flawless first period and should have put them away when they had the chance. Blashill said they got too passive in the second period, which I would agree with. Ryan Donato scored the first Blackhawks goal of the night on the power play last night. He obviously wasn’t on the ice with his even strength linemates, Jason Dickinson and Ilya Mikheyev, when he scored the goal. But Donato continues to be a really nice Swiss army knife for the Blackhawks. I asked Blashill about how Donato’s worked on the line with Dickinson and Mikheyev after the morning skate on Friday.

“That line’s been really, really good,” Blashill said. “I think all three components have been good on it, but I think what Ryan does is give them some scoring punch on that line. Ryan’s a guy who can score on one shot. He doesn’t need volume necessarily. So I think he’s been kind of a good complement on that line. Ryan and I talked about making sure we’re checking for our offense and when you’re on that line, you have to check for your offense because enough times you’re out there, either D zone situations or against other teams’ good players. not cheating for offense but checking for offense and I think he’s done a really good job of that. He’s been a good fit on that line.”

Yes, Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar are roommates on the road. That’s confirmed. The Blackhawks activated Landon Slaggert off IR before the game last night. We’ll see if he draws into the lineup against the Ducks on Sunday evening. True story: Wayne Gretzky’s first NHL game was in the Chicago Stadium. One of the highest graded tickets in existence from that game is up for auction right now. Before the Blackhawks dropped the puck with the Canucks last night, the price was already over $57,000!

Hey, how about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

Marek Vanacker scored his ninth and tenth goals of the season, both coming on the power play. He also had two assists in a 7-3 Bulldogs win.

    — Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) October 18, 2025 Jack Pridham scored his sixth goal of the season for Kitchener. Unfortunately, they were chasing five at the time and lost 6-1. How about Oliver Moore opening the scoring for the IceHogs last night? He scored this goal just 75 second after the opening puck drop.

    Other stuff

Tough news for the Los Angeles Kings: Anže Kopitar, who is in the final year of his Hall of Fame career, will be out week-to-week with a foot injury. He was hit by a puck against Minnesota. The Kings are in Chicago on Oct. 26 — that’s in eight days for those counting at home. A minor trade went down in the Western Conference on Friday. The Minnesota Wild acquired forward Oskar Olausson from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Kyle Masters. The Montreal Canadiens announced defenseman Kaiden Guhle will miss 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury. Know anybody who loves hockey and has $2.5 billion laying around? The owner of the Islanders told Front Office Sports that the minimum price tag to buy into the NHL when they expand again will be $2 billion plus another $500 million for a new arena.

The NHL's next expansion franchise will have a minimum price of $2 billion, Islanders owner Jon Ledecky told FOS onstage at Asset Class on Thursday. An expansion franchise's ownership group would also need to commit at least $500 million for a new arena.
