A good quarterback will likely possess a strong and accurate throwing arm, leadership skills, intelligence, athleticism, size and quick feet with the ability to scramble.
For Corona del Mar High senior Brady Annett, you can include resiliency.
Last year in a Bravo League football game against Tesoro, a 44-14 win for the Sea Kings in which Annett passed for 285 yards, he was hit by a defender while making a throw, knocking his right (throwing) shoulder out of socket. It was repaired by members of the CdM training staff and Annett returned to the field, based on the quarterback’s insistence that he was fine to play.
The next week, in the season finale, Annett threw for 275 yards against Yorba Linda. But unbeknownst to anyone, Annett was playing with a torn labrum.
“For him being able to do that is a tribute to his toughness,” CdM Coach Kevin Hettig said.
Annett underwent surgery after the season in December, and what followed was six grueling months of rehabilitation. “No throwing,” Annett said.
Despite the injury, Annett entered this season as the fifth-rated quarterback in Orange County, according to the Orange County Register. A 6-foot-2, 190-pound three-sport athlete, Annett has formidable speed, running a 4.5 40-yard dash, along with his arm talent.
On his X account, there are eye-popping videos of Annett’s jumping ability, in which he’s slam dunking a basketball (10-foot rim) from a standing position, and in waist-high water leaping out of a swimming pool with no hands.
After Corona del Mar missed the CIF-Southern Section playoffs last year for the first time in 14 seasons, Annett has sparked the Sea Kings this year to their first 7-0 start since 2019, when they finished 16-0 and won CIF-SS and CIF State championships with standouts Ethan Garbers (UCLA/Carolina Panthers), Mark Redman (Louisville/Los Angeles Rams) and John Humphreys (Stanford), all local products.
In their most shocking victory in 2025, the Sea Kings unleashed a balanced offensive and defensive attack to upset heavily favored and previously undefeated San Juan Hills, 33-10, in a Bravo League game Oct. 2. The Stallions are the defending league champions.
What made the Sea Kings’ lopsided win so impressive was the play of Annett, who passed for 274 yards and four touchdowns, completing 18 of 22 throws.
On his third touchdown pass, Annett’s skill was on full display in the Sea Kings’ biggest win of the season. With 7:10 left in the third quarter, Annett scrambled left out of the pocket, evaded two San Juan Hills defenders, back-paddled in heavy traffic and fired a strike to Dorsett Stecker in the back of the end zone for a 19-yard scoring toss.
On the CdM sideline, Hettig yelled “No!” as Annett threw the pass, then changed his tune to “Yes!” upon Stecker’s leaping grab between two defenders. The touchdown increased CdM’s lead to 24-3.
There was only a small window for Annett’s on-target aerial to Stecker and it could be the defining moment in an unforgettable season for Corona del Mar.
“It’s time to recognize that (Annett) is pretty good,” Hettig said. “He made three or four plays (against the Stallions) that I don’t know how many quarterbacks in Orange County can make.”
Annett, who also fired notable scoring tosses to J.J. Haley and Garrett James in the San Juan Hills victory, features excellent footwork in and out of the pocket, allowing him to successfully move forward, backward and sideways, conjuring up images of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes when the three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback scrambles and dodges would-be tacklers.
