Greeley resident Jerry Harvey will run to represent Colorado House District 50 in 2026, aiming to bring a people-first ideology focused on education and affordable housing to the state Capitol.
A resident for nearly a decade, Harvey has thrown his hat into the ring for next year’s election for House District 50, which encompasses the entirety of east Greeley, as well as Evans and Garden City. If elected, he says he’ll focus on addressing issues with education, housing, health care, infrastructure and giving workers a living wage.
“This campaign is not about me. It’s about the people of House District 50. It’s about building a community where everyone has a fair shot at a bright future,” Harvey said in his campaign announcement. “It’s about fighting for our shared values and ensuring our voices are heard in Denver.”
Harvey currently serves as the board liaison for the Board of Trustees at Aims Community College. Before that, he worked with the Greeley City Clerk’s Office, coordinating the city’s 23 volunteer boards and commissions and supporting the city council.
With several years of experience in education, including serving as an academic advisor before moving to Greeley, Harvey’s campaign focuses on education.
“Without a quality education, people cannot succeed. And without a quality education system, a community cannot succeed,” he said. “The future of Colorado depends on properly investing in our schools and our teachers.”
Harvey has also served the community in roles on the Greeley Human Relations Commission and with the Latino Coalition of Weld County. According to Harvey, these experiences have given him firsthand insight into the many issues facing residents and the benefits that come from a responsive, community-first governance.
“I believe, with every fiber of my being, that everyone deserves dignity, respect and a fair shot. These are my core values, and they will be the guiding light for this campaign,” Harvey said.
The District 50 seat, which had been filled by a Democrat since Jim Riesberg won the seat in 2004, was flipped last year by Republican Rep. Ryan Gonzalez, who won by only a few dozen votes against Mary Young, the incumbent.
Gonzalez will run as the incumbent next year, hoping to keep his seat in the House. In the primary, Harvey so far faces a challenger only in Greeley City Councilman Tommy Butler, a fellow advocate for many of the same priorities in Harvey’s campaign.
