Germany Tops Close Race With Italy & Hungary For Mixed 4×1500 Euros Gold

Open water swimming at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships has officially concluded. The week culminated with the mixed 4×1500 race today, which saw Germany earn its 4th open water gold of the meet. Italy picked up the silver and Hungary rounded out the podium with bronze. While these three nations finished within three seconds of each other, no other country came within two minutes of the winner.

Each of the top three teams opted for a FFMM line-up. Türkiye, which started out with a male swimmer in Emir Batur Albayrak, got off to a 32-second lead over 2nd place Italian Barbara Pozzobon. Pozzobon’s position allowed 10k and 5k champion Ginevra Taddeucci to dive in and take the lead during the second leg. Repping Germany on the second leg, Isabel Gose got her nation from 2nd to 6th. Hungarian women Bettina Fabian and Viktoria Mihalyvari held their flag at a steady third place throughout the race’s first half.

As the race turned over from the ladies to the gentlemen, Germany took the pole position, courtesy of third leg Oliver Klemet. He had clear water by the end of his segment, enjoying an eight-second lead over Kristof Rasovszky, who temporarily moved Hungary up to second place. By this point, the podium finishers would as clear as day be Germany, Hungary, and Italy. The only question was in what order would they finish, as Florian Wellbrock, David Betlehem, and Gregorio Paltrinieri took the reins for their respective countries. The latter two names did a great job of closing the gap on Wellbrock, but it was too little too late to deny Germany its fourth gold of the meet. Paltrinieri was successful in reeling in and passing Betlehem, yeseterday’s 3k knockout champion, to win Italy a silver medal. Hungary, a model of consistency throughout the four legs, earned third place to pick up its seventh medal of the week. It was the only country to medal in every single event.

By metric of wins, though, Germany is the week’s gold standard. The nation tops the medal table with over half of the event wins, reinforcing Bernd Berkhahn‘s Magdeburg training group as the open water capital of the world. Wellbrock, Berkhahn’s biggest male star, topped the individual table with three golds, while Italy’s Taddeucci emerged as the only athlete to win four medals of any color. See the team medal table below.
