Blackhawks 8, Blues 3 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

When Blues head coach Jim Montgomery chatted with Darren Pang during the first period, he said the Blues were going to take the game over “slowly but surely.” The score at the time was 2-2.

That did not happen.

The Blackhawks scored twice in the first five minutes of the second period. The Blues made a change in net with 12:15 left in the second. The Blackhawks scored less than two minutes after Jordan Binnington came into the game. I laughed. The Blackhawks led by three after 40 minutes.

Montgomery went back to Hofer to start the third period (because the goalie wasn’t the whole problem) and the Blackhawks scored 77 seconds into the third period. They scored a power play goal to reach seven. They scored an eighth later in the third — tying the Blackhawks’ franchise record for goals against the Blues. Centennial season indeed!

    Star(s) 1: Donato — Dickinson — Mikheyev

I’m giving the entire third line our No. 1 star of the night because they were individually terrific — collectively magnificent. As a unit, these guys had an expected Goals For percentage (at 5-on-5) of 84.75. They were on the ice for 19 Blackhawks shot attempts to 10 for the Blues, nine Blackhawks scoring chances to three for the Blues and three Blackhawks goals to one for St. Louis.

Jason Dickinson‘s been excellent defensively to start the season, but it was great to see him score his first goal of the season. The Blackhawks’ third line could really make life miserable for opponents by flipping the ice with their speed and putting goals on the board. And the scoring is coming from that trio right now. Dickinson was plus-four and won 11 of 16 faceoffs.

    — BlackhawksFocus (@FocusBlackhawks) October 16, 2025 Ilya Mikheyev should probably write a Thank You note to Hofer for the game’s first goal. The Blues’ goaltender found a wide open Mikheyev for an easy point blank shot into the empty cage. In all seriousness, Mikheyev’s goal three minutes into regulation gave him three goals in as many periods going back to Monday night’s win. His calling card is his defense, but the goals are coming fast and furious right now for Mikheyev. Mikheyev was plus-three with one goal and one assist.

    — BlackhawksFocus (@FocusBlackhawks) October 16, 2025 Let’s not leave Ryan Donato out of this fun! The Blackhawks third line was absolutely dominant. Donato scored the Blackhawks’ sixth goal of the night (with a helper to Mikheyev). Donato was plus-two with four shots on goal (seven shot attempts).

    Star 2: Lukas Reichel

If we keep it 100, the only reason Reichel was in the lineup tonight was because captain Nick Foligno isn’t with the Blackhawks. I’ve been begging for Reichel to be more decisive and selfish with the puck for three years. The first chance he got to show off his wheels and make an impact, he did. He only skated 3:43 in the first period (lowest on the team), but put two shots on net in his five shifts. And he got a beautiful redirect on a shot by Alex Vlasic in the second period for a second goal and added an assist on the eighth goal of the night for a three-point performance. He was skating with pace and swagger we haven’t seen in years.

This was the Lukas Reichel that can make an impact.

    Star 3: Ryan Greene

There could have easily been another half dozen guys in this slot, but I’m going to be consistent. If you score your first career NHL goal, you’re one of my three stars. And Greene had a pretty finish here to score the Blackhawks’ eighth goal of the night.

    Key Takeaways

The key to the clip below is Frank Nazar escaping the pile where the Blues were trying to steal his lunch money after he scored on them and celebrating his goal while everyone was discussing the lack of interesting things to do in St. Louis. Nazar won 4 of 9 faceoffs thru two periods.

    — BlackhawksFocus (@FocusBlackhawks) October 16, 2025 The Blackhawks may have out-shot the Blues 10-7 in the first period, but the Blackhawks weren’t exactly taking care of the puck. The Blackhawks had ten giveaways in the first period and Natural Stat Trick had the high danger chances (at 5-on-5) favoring St. Louis 5-0. Arvid Söderblom had to make a few tough saves in the first period and another huge save in the opening minute of the second. The Blackhawks out-scored the Blues 3-0 in the second period. The numbers I just cited that I didn’t like in the first period? Flipped in the second. The Blackhawks had a 5-1 advantage in high danger scoring chances (at 5-on-5), and the giveaway totals were now 13 for the Blackhawks and 12 for the Blues. The Blackhawks dominated most of the period, but Söderblom made a few more timely saves to keep the momentum in white and red. Söderblom stopped 23 of 26 in the game. The final score was very one-sided, but he made some big saves throughout the game. Vlasic had two assists in the second period. He picked up a third on the Donato goal early in the third period. Vlasic became just the fifth different Blackhawks defenseman in the past 30 years to record three primary assists in a game tonight. The Blackhawks got a power play early in the third period and buried another one, this coming off the stick of Teuvo Teräväinen thanks to a gorgeous pass from Connor Bedard. Bedard had three assists in the game.
