Someone slap me in the face and douse me with a bucket of cold water – I’m starting to believe in the Chicago Bulls.
To be absolutely clear, no, I don’t think this team is about to take the NBA by storm and become a respected contender. They still have a long way to go before they can be taken seriously by their peers. With that said, I can not help but feel some genuine excitement about some of the young talent on this roster. More specifically … I’m starting to believe that Matas Buzelis could be a star.
Yes, I know I’m saying this after four preseason games. And, yes, I still think we should be cautious about the expectations we set for the second year forward. But he continues to check all the right boxes. In a matchup against a deep and talented Denver Nuggets squad, Buzelis looked like one of the best players on the floor. He has now recorded 19+ points in three of his four preseason contests, and he’s done it while shooting 63.6 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from downtown.
If you missed his stellar first half on Tuesday night – which included four of his five blocks – I highly encourage you to watch the highlights. The Bulls have desperately needed someone who consistently impacts both sides of the ball and builds the confidence of everyone around him. Buzelis is showing he can be that guy.
Bulls’ First Half in Denver Featured Plenty of Matas Buzelis Awesomeness Nevertheless, the Chicago Bulls’ leading scorer in Denver was their new $100 million man. Josh Giddey looked a lot more like his 2024-25 post-All-Star-break self while dropping 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. What really stood out was the willingness to lean on his size advantage. For someone who stands six-foot-eight, it wasn’t until last year’s final month and a half that we saw the guard embrace a consistent level of physicality. Last night, he shot 7-14 from the field and had a couple of nice finishes over the top of a small Bruce Brown. Giddey also sliced his way into the paint and initiated contact for multiple trips to the free-throw line, where he shot a perfect 8-8. The free-throw rate, in particular, is something I’ll have a close eye on from the moment this regular season tips off. This department arguably saw the biggest change from the first half of last year to the second. He averaged just 2.2 free-throw attempts a night over his first 51 games of the season. To end the year, he bumped that number up to 5.8 attempts per game. This needs to become a staple of his game. Of course, we also shouldn’t ignore the fact that Giddey drained three triples in the first quarter alone. He looked comfortable and confident firing away, which should be an incredibly encouraging sign for head coach Billy Donovan. Look, I don’t think he ever has to become some kind of high-volume threat, but the Chicago Bulls need him to at least be a respectable catch-and-shoot threat off the ball. While it was great to see him shoot a career-high 37.8 percent last season behind the arc, he has to show that it wasn’t a fluke in a contract year.Last night, Josh Giddey looked a lot more like the guy we saw in the 2nd half of last season. Not only splashed three triples in the 1st quarter, but repeatedly used his size advantage in the paint. Either finished over Bruce Brown or drew a whistle (8-8 FT).More of this! pic.twitter.com/z1npBkwNW9
— Elias Schuster (@Schuster_Elias) October 15, 2025 The Chicago Bulls are going to be fun to watch and become a fan-favorite on League Pass. I’m pretty confident about that. However, the only way for them to truly surprise people this season is to clean up both the turnovers and fouling. The preseason is the time to make mistakes, so I’m not going to press the panic button just yet … but it has been ugly. They have committed 18+ turnovers in three of their four games. They’ve also now committed more than 28 fouls in two of the preseason games. Denver just shot 41 free throws! Trying to become a more physical team is going to come with an adjustment period, I get that. At the same time, this group isn’t built on paper to be a very successful defensive team. Fouling may just become a nightly issue. Now, I do at least think the turnover troubles will subside a bit. Even if Coby White isn’t the most efficient facilitator, he has only improved as a ballhandler and decision-maker over the years. The plan is still for him to return on opening night, and this will give the Chicago Bulls another trustworthy option to initiate some offense in the backcourt. Always in the gym working, dedicating his whole time to getting better. I think he’s very talented, and if he’s going to keep working like this, he’s going to be one of the greatest.”"If he's going to keep working like this, he's going to be one of the greatest."Jonas Valančiūnas, captain of the Lithuanian National Team, has high praise for 21-year-old @BuzelisMatas ??? pic.twitter.com/EZ5uab7LRR

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) October 15, 2025 We have talked a lot about Patrick Williams in recent days, which is why it feels fitting to direct you toward Joe Cowley’s latest piece for the Chicago Sun-Times. He talked a little more about Williams’ reserve role and shares a few interesting quotes from Billy Donovan on how the team will manage his minutes this season. If one thing is certain, it seems that the generous $90 million payday will not influence how this coaching staff treats Williams this year. Minutes will have to be earned. Did you see ESPN’s simulation of the 2025-26 NBA season? The Chicago Bulls are playoff-bound, baby! First-round sweep, here we come! The Blackhawks’ veteran captain has taken a leave of absence as his daughter undergoes surgery. Wishing him and his family the best! Six Cubs were named Gold Glove finalists … but Dansby Swanson isn’t one of them.
