Despite an incredibly streaky season featuring high highs and low lows, the Giants could always rely on great defense from their Opening Day battery.
Catcher Patrick Bailey and starting pitcher Logan Webb were both named finalists for the Gold Glove at their respective positions, Rawlings announced on Wednesday morning.
Bailey, 26, won his first Gold Glove Award last year and has been nominated for the hardware three times in three seasons. He could become the first Giant to win a Gold Glove in back-to-back seasons since shortstop Brandon Crawford won three straight from 2015-17.
For Webb, 28, this is his first career nomination.
Third baseman Matt Chapman had an excellent defensive season (+5 defensive runs saved) but was not nominated for a Gold Glove Award at third base.
Other nominees with Bay Area ties are Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan (Washington High School, Fremont), Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner (Head-Royce School, Oakland) and Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien (St. Mary’s College High School and Cal).
The winners will be announced on Nov. 2.
Of the two, Bailey likely has the better odds of taking home the hardware simply because he was the most valuable defender in baseball, according to Baseball Savant’s Fielding Run Value metric.
Bailey’s Fielding Run Value of +31 was the most in a single season since the metric started being recorded in 2018. The previous record belonged to, coincidentally, Bailey and Nick Ahmed, who both had seasons where they had a Fielding Run Value of +28.
Given Bailey’s impact with his glove, it’s also possible that he becomes the first Giant to ever win the Platinum Glove Award. The only catchers to win the award since its inception in 2011 are Yadier Molina (four times), Cal Raleigh and Jose Trevino.
The bulk of Bailey’s value derived from his framing, which wasn’t just elite, but the best in recorded history.
Bailey finished the season with +25 Catcher Framing Runs, which is also the most in a single season since the stat began being recorded in 2018. Similar to Fielding Run Value, Bailey broke his own record of +23 from last season, a record he shared with Austin Hedges (2019).
Along with his framing, Bailey totaled a career-high 27 caught stealings on 88 attempts with an average pop time of 1.86 seconds tied with the Phillies’ J.T. Realmuto and the Pirates’ Endy Rodriguez for the best mark in all of baseball.
Webb, who could also be a finalist for the NL Cy Young Award, also enjoyed the best defensive season of his career.
Along with pitching the most innings in the majors (207), Webb totaled a career-high seven defensive runs saved, the most among all pitchers in the National League. From 2019-24, by contrast, Webb was worth -4 defensive runs saved.
Webb’s biggest stride as a defender was his ability to prevent steals, which had been a problem for him in recent seasons. After allowing 20 steals in ’23 and 21 steals in ’24, Webb only allowed nine steals this season, the fewest since he became a full-time starter.
