Kicker Thoughts, OL Grades, Rome, Luther, New Podcast Alert, and Other Bears Bullets

The Bears playing on Monday Night Football has made waking up on a gray Wednesday in Chicago feel Monday-ish. I wish I could explain more, but I’d rather dive into Bullets.

HEADS UP! The newest installment of The BN Bears Podcast is OUT: If I could give out an extra game ball, it would have gone out to everyone who showed up at Frontier on Monday night. That was such a fun group. Regulars, newcomers, teammates, associates, and everyone else who was there made it such a good vibe. I’m so glad the Bears gave us something to enjoy. Where do we sign up for more of that? I love that Bears kicker Jake Moody gave props to everyone around him for his game-winning field goal. “Hitting a game-winner is always a good time. Doing it for a new team in my first game, it’s huge,” Moody said, via the Bears’ official website. “Shoutout to the O-line. Shoutout to (long snapper) Scott (Daly) and (holder) Tory (Taylor). They’ve been making my job real easy out here and the transition has been really smooth. So, glad to be a part of a team like this and we’re going to keep moving forward.” It will be interesting to see how this team handles the kicking situation moving forward. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson didn’t sound like someone ready to send Jake Moody back to the practice squad. Johnson said he wasn’t surprised by Moody’s success, citing the kicker’s practice success and adding his belief that the change of scenery was “really good for him.” It isn’t the type of tone you’d expect from a coach who would be otherwise all-in with his regular kicker. That makes this situation worth monitoring closely in the days, weeks, and even months ahead. Mandatory Credit: Peter Casey-Imagn Images What if the Week 17 matchup between the Bears and 49ers comes down to a kickoff off the foot of ex-Bear Eddy Piñeiro or former Niners kicker Jake Moody? Something to chew on: Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has made just 78.6 percent of his field goals this year. After nailing 94.3 percent of his kicks in 2023, Butker has been successful on just 82.1 percent of his tries since the start of the 2024 season. If you’ll recall, Cairo Santos landed in Chicago (and stuck around) because of his connections to then-Bears coach Matt Nagy. If current trends hold, maybe the two can have a reunion in Kansas City. Someone get the Bears and Chiefs GMs on the phone so they can cut another deal. Notable overall grades for Bears offensive lineman via Pro Football Focus: Right tackle Darnell Wright, 71.0 (21st of 78 offensive tackles) Left guard Joe Thuney, 71.4 (14th of 79 guards) Center Drew Dalman, 69.8 (7th of 35 centers) I’m still miffed about Rome Odunze’s touchdown streak ending because of an egregious penalty that didn’t need to be called. But that won’t stop me from enjoying it because the throw, the body control, and the catch were unreal:

    — Kevin Kaduk (@KevinKaduk) October 14, 2025 While scrolling through YouTube in the offseason, I found a video highlighting the best touchdowns that didn’t count. I fully expect the non-score above to make it when the next rendition of that video drops. Even after being held out of the end zone, this is Rome Odunze’s 17-game pace based on his production through five games of the 2025 NFL season: 75 catches, 1,115 yards, 17 touchdowns. Here are the numbers Bears QB Caleb Williams is putting up when Luther Burden III: 10/11 (90.9%), 145 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 149.1 passer rating. It is a small sample, to be sure. But it is an encouraging one, too. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images Every team in the NFC North has a winning record after six weeks. I don’t look at this as something to shy away from because I know that it will be that much sweeter when the Bears pull off upset wins later this year against the Vikings, Lions, and Packers. For what it’s worth: Chicago’s next four games are at home against New Orleans (1-5), on the road at Baltimore (1-5), in Cincinnati (2-4), and at home versus the New York Giants (2-4). How many games do you think the Bears will win? Before the season, I would have been OK with a 2-2 split. But three consecutive wins have me feeling greedy. Go win four games and establish yourself as a team on the rise in the NFL.
