Are We Getting Closer to Finding Roman? What Happened on This Weeks High Potential

We're just a few episodes away from High Potential'smid-season finale and, to be honest, we have more questions than answers about Morgan's (Kaitlin Olson) missing ex, Roman. And, now, with the arrival of Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey), there's a whole new element of surprise—what will happen next?

Fortunately, we do make a little bit of headway on the Roman mystery this week, and the squad dives into the world of content creators with their latest case. Here's everything that happened in the episode "Content Warning."

Morgan pays a visit to Arthur (Mekhi Phifer) after stalking his landscaping business' Yelp reviews to figure out where she might find him. She asks him to tell her where Roman is, but Arthur says he called from a burner phone and he didn’t even see Roman when he got to Nevada to retrieve that mysterious backpack. Morgan, not one to take "no" for an answer, tells Arthur she wants the backpack and that she’ll text him with a time and a place to meet up in order to get it.

At the precinct, Lt. Soto (Judy Reyes) is introducing the squad to their new captain, Nick Wagner. Wagner tells the team that he plans on meeting with each person in the department informally to get to know them better. We get an inkling as to Wagner's backstory when we learn that he's from a police dynasty of former captains.

Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) and Morgan are dispatched to a pond where a body was found in a sunken car. The victim is identified as Tori Nolan. They find her car keys with a storage unit key attached and go to search it. That's where Morgan and Karadec learn that Tori was an investigative journalist and was undercover on assignment at the time of her death. Her editor requests proof of life from Tori when she’s working on a story, and the latest photo they received gives Morgan and Karadec clues as to where she was last seen. It just so happens to be awfully close to a content house.

Tori was going under the assumed name of Darla at the content house, where she was pretending to be a content creator herself. It's here that Morgan and Karadec find the red dye that was found all over Tori's body and car. Three housemates confess to playing a prank on Tori involving that red dye, which is what led to parts of her body having burns at her time of death.

The fitness creator of the trio says they played the prank because she thought Tori stole her sought-after L3 Protein powder, which she was supposed to make content for exclusively. She was the only person to get the product before the launch, which would bring her a ton of traffic...and money.

Still, it was a gunshot that killed Tori—not the explosive prank—so Karadec and Morgan have more digging to do to find her actual murderer.

Following the trail to Tori's car

It isn't actually that difficult to find the path Tori's car would have taken after the prank explosion leaving the content house because there was so much red dye involved. When Karadec and Morgan arrive at the point where they believe she was shot, the content house's owner, Phineas, pulls up. He speeds away when he realizes the cops are there.

Cut to a brief scene at Morgan's humble abode where she tells Ava (Amirah J) that she went to see Arthur and plans to get the backpack from him. Of course Ava is excited by this development, but then disappointed when Morgan tells her that only she will go to get the backpack.

Meanwhile, over at the precinct, Daphne (Javicia Leslie) and Soto are watching Phineas (the content house owner), who is waiting in an interrogation room for Karadec and Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) to question him. Wagner walks in to observe and tries to get some time with Morgan when she arrives, but she brushes him off to watch the interrogation.

Phineas admits that he moved Tori’s body in fear of losing the lease on the content house. However, he said she was so covered in the red dye and stuff from the explosion, he had no idea she had been shot. No longer a suspect for her murder, Phineas hands over Tori’s laptop and bag to the detectives for leniency on other charges. In the bag, they find the protein powder that the fitness influencer accused her of taking in the first place, leading to the prank.

Morgan tries to figure out why Tori would have taken the protein powder, because she wasn't looking for social media traffic of her own. As it turns out, Tori wasn't investigating the content house, but rather the protein powder instead. It's a product manufactured by her college nemesis Bobby Romano, who doxxed her after she wrote something negative about him in their campus newspaper many years ago.

When Karadec and Morgan go to see Bobby at his factory, he proves not to be the brightest crayon in the box, but he's willing to talk to them.

Bobby tells them that Tori reached out to him a week earlier and said she was going to end him for good this time, but he hung up on her. Then they learned that Bobby, who has spent time in prison for previous business scams, visits a halfway house for ex-cons once a week.

Before the halfway house can be questioned, Karadec is summoned to meet with Wagner for his one-on-one "chat," but the only questions Wagner has for him are about Morgan. It all feels creepy and off-putting, to be perfectly honest. What is Wagner's deal with Morgan?

At the same time, Morgan meets Arthur at a diner for the backpack exchange, only he doesn’t bring it with him.

“You think whatever’s in that bag will give you answers, not just more questions?” he asks her.

To Morgan's dismay, Ava shows up unexpectedly, where the teen pleads with Arthur for the backpack. He agrees to get it to them, and Morgan forces Ava out of the diner in anger.

At the halfway house, Karadec and Oz question Dominic Wexler, the man who runs it, about Bobby. Interestingly, he has nothing but good things to say. He does admit that Bobby missed his last session at the halfway house, but never thought he’d hurt Tori.

When they go to the factory to, in theory, arrest Bobby, they find him dead. It looks like a drug overdose, but something isn't adding up. Ultimately, a lot of party drugs, the same that Bobby appeared to OD on, are discovered in a lot of protein powder canisters. This leads the team to believe L3 was a front for drug trafficking. They also find a gun that matches the ballistics in the bullet that killed Tori in Bobby's office.

What might seem obvious to everyone else doesn't make sense to Morgan. After some investigating and research, she decides someone drugged the soup Bobby was going to eat for lunch. She also asserts whoever did that is the same person who shot Tori, masterminding the whole thing.

To the surprise of viewers, it turns out that Bobby had no idea about the drug operation. It was something drummed up by Lamar—a fellow ex-con Bobby met at the halfway house—and the halfway house owner, Dominic (with Dominic being the mastermind). When Tori reached out to Bobby to say she was going to take him down, he didn't know what for, but Dominic did. So when Bobby shared Tori's ominous call at a meeting, Dominic killed her so she couldn't expose his own drug operation. Then he proceeded to kill Bobby to tie up loose ends.

The Morgan and Wagner dance continues

At the end of the episode, Morgan is adding coolant to her car in the parking lot when Wagner pulls up and asks if she needs help. They have some banter that turns into almost an interrogation. Wagner's interest in Morgan clearly extends far beyond the daily workings of the precinct, and it's suspect.

Morgan heads home, where she and Ava have an argument about her showing up at the meeting with Arthur. While Ava storms off to her room, there's a knock at the door minutes later. It turns out, Arthur has left the backpack there. Morgan disappears into her room with the backpack, and we're left to question what's in it until next week.
