A news outlet published dash-cam footage from a garbage truck that it says challenges Alec Baldwin’s account of how that commercial vehicle — “the size of a whale” — cut him off and forced him to crash his wife’s Range Rover head-on into a tree Monday afternoon.
Neither Alec Baldwin nor his younger brother Stephen Baldwin, who was a passenger in the Range Rover, was injured in the crash on a rainy Monday afternoon on Montauk Highway, East Hampton.
In a video shared with his 2.5 million Instagram followers, the 67-year-old Emmy winner said he was driving along the highway and swerved to avoid hitting the truck.
“Anyway, I won’t go into the details, but to avoid hitting him, I hit a tree,” Baldwin said. “I hit a big fat tree, and crushed my car and my wife’s car. I feel bad about that, but it’s all fine, and I’m fine, and my brother’s fine.”
Newsmax published a 1-minute, 29-second front-facing video, taken from the garbage truck’s cab. Newsmax says it shows the truck exiting a parking lot and appearing to make “a legal right turn” onto the highway in East Hampton, New York, before Alec Baldwin’s white Range Rover comes into view.
However, the New York Post points out that the video “arguably shows the garbage truck roll through a stop before making a turn, giving Baldwin little time to slow down on a clearly wet and slippery road.”
In either case, about 30 seconds into the video, Baldwin’s Range Rover appears to attempt to pass the truck on the right, before veering onto the shoulder and striking a large tree head-on. The video also shows the Range Rover’s crumpled front end, while photos captured Baldwin outside his vehicle, making a phone call.
The New York Post said that East Hampton police appear to back up Baldwin’s account. In a statement, the department’s chief, Michael Sarlo, said that the Range Rover “was found to have struck a tree on the Eastbound shoulder of the roadway while avoiding the turning action of a 2020 Mack commercial truck, registered to National Waste Services out of Bay Shore, NY.”
The chief also said there were no reported injuries and summons would not be issued. He said the contributing factors to the accident “were found to be a reaction to an uninvolved vehicle and the slippery and wet roadway conditions.”
