Texas running back Jerrick Gibson, a former 4-star recruit, has left the program, according to a report Tuesday afternoon by Inside Texas.
Gibson had an extremely high ceiling when his recruiting process started, as he ranked No. 12 overall on the 247Sports Composite list on March 9, 2022. The 5-foot-10, 206-pound Gainesville native also has a Florida background, being a former UF commit before Dan Mullen was fired as head coach in November 2021.
After decommitting from Florida, Gibson then committed to Texas on June 24, 2023, and was one of the top running backs in the Class of 2024. He finished his high school cycle as the No. 117 overall player and the No. 9 running back in the country, per 247Sports Composite rankings.
Gibson had 152 yards on 37 carries and 1 touchdown this season for Texas. Last season as a freshman, he averaged nearly 5 yards per carry, finishing with 377 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. Gibson caught 3 passes for 25 yards last year but didn’t catch a pass this season before his reported departure from the program.
He was a product of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., transferring there for his junior season in 2022. His high school career started at Gainesville High in 2020 before he moved onto Mundy’s Mill High School in Jonesboro, Ga., as a sophomore.
Now, Gibson is apparently moving on again, taking his collegiate career somewhere else after a season and a half at Texas.
